Also: are you using a Mweb Business ADSL account (like R2300pm for 4Mbps uncapped) or a Consumer ADSL account (like R900pm for 4Mbps)? It really seems to me like your running on the consumer uncapped account.

My office is running on Mweb Business 4Mbps and we're about 10 people and we've never had speed problems. We're doing our own speed limiting in the office itself, which is the only reason why our downloads would be slow.
 
Just as a matter of interest, I did a google search for "mweb uncapped problems", here is a similar post to ours that comes up with at least two people complaining about service degradations since seacom.

I would also again like to make clear the fact that this issue of ours is not download related, but more related to slow and intermittent browsing experience. We're not a bunch of P2P junkies, while we do occasionally run torrents over weekends we keep them closed during the week out of consideration for the other people on our connection. While we do download alot this is generally in short batches, ie drivers and updates for a particular system, so it would be fair to say that we are not constantly maxing our connection. (Which, mweb has also assured us, is not the case as according to them we would have been notified of overutilization.)
 
@Pada, we are curently using the consumer version, but as I explained earlier, the problem still exists with only one PC connected. We have considered upgrading to the Business package out of desperation, but are holding back for fear of the problem still occurring, effectively incurring extra costs for no reason. I spoke with a jr. technician on Saturday who was going to verify with a senior whether this would resolve our issue. Also none of the people we have spoken to (that I personally am aware of) have suggested we take that route.

I'd say that the problem is that you're using a shaped (consumer) account, which isn't meant for high/fast usage during office hours!
As you've said earlier, the problem is most likely not with your ADSL line since the speed on the Axxess unshaped account is OK.

Both @dslmweb.co.za and @mweb.co.za realms are shaped accounts. I'd suggest that you do speed tests on the line after hours (like after midnight)
OR see if Mweb could allow you to get a test Business account.
 
CURRENTLY 20 Sept 2010

During the DAY Mweb is very shaped according to site and protocol. So during the day downloads from File Hosts or P2P will snail .
At the moment if I download something from megaupload or hotfile I only get around 60Kb (fluctuates abit) which is rather pathetic.
Torrents will also be super slow during the day. ..but like i said its site and protocol specific so normal sites you get full download speed during the day.
I just downloaded MS Security Essentials at over a 1MB\s so :/ ( from microsoft )

but at night restrictions are lifted (seems like after 5 I get full speeds again) and they allow you to download at over a meg\s (1MB\s usually no lower then 950Kb) with file hosts and P2P (600Kb at most) .
so roughly 3.5 Gb a hour if know how to download at line speed.

Gaming Latency are good though.. MWEB gives you 8mb ( 1MB\s + - actual maximum Download ) con connection speed so if you synching at 10megs.. you will have 2meg worth of bandwith to plays games with
while you download at over a MEG

*EDIT*
This doesnt hold true anymore, getting 4meg download speeds now from normal sites (450-500) and Filehost downloads and P2P are really poor now at around 60Kbps :/
even after hours.

If it does'nt improve I'm going cancel and try another ISP, 60Kb from Filehosts and P2P on 4mg uncapped is unnaceptable, I'm paying R539 pm !

Anyways was nice while it lasted.

I have tested the line after hours. And regardless of what time it was done, it was tested with only one computer connected to the router, as per request from mweb tech. Problem still existed.

Surely this then affirms the fact that it has nothing to do with there being too many computers/users using the connection and also that we are not broaching any thresholds etc. as the one computer that was connected had nothing running on the internet other than sites that I was testing with and traceroutes speedtests etc.

Our one technician stays on the premises and uses the connection after hours, and yes it does speed up, but certain sites still do not work correctly.

And surely if it was a shaping/bandwidth issue then downloads would suffer most rather than browsing? As I have reiterated throughout my post, download speeds are fine.
 
wmcquillan: I would suggest that you go onto your router's webpage and look for the ADSL statistics (line attenuation, SNR margin & sync rates) and post them here.

Generally downloads use HTTP as well so there should be little or no difference. Do you download using a download manager? Is it the slowdown of sites limited to international or local? Don't assume just because a site is .co.za it's local as it might be hosted on a server in the US.

Hi deedalie

Just to clarify this point, the near 10mb speeds you were getting would have been due to the fact that you were using SAIX wholesale bandwidth while we were load balancing. We were not limiting customers to their product speeds on SAIX.

Now that you are back on IPC you are being correctly limited to your 4mb product speeds.

We have not yet launched our 10mb uncapped product, but when we do you will be able to upgrade to this at the appropriate pricing.

So.. After the upgrade, we are still having issues. We have decided to cancel our connection with mweb completely.

We have also found two other people in our town complaining about the exact same connection. We are urging them to bring their complaints to mweb in the hope that they might now sit up and pay attention.

Day 4 on axxess, costs alot but works twice as well as mweb did.
 
100 respect points says this is a DNS issue.

Open router admin page, set DNS server to 8.8.8.8 both Primary and Secondary.

On each PC: Start->Run->cmd->ipconfig /flushdns

Restart PCs.

That's the Google DNS server, yes? I asked the technician whether changing to Google DNS would help reveal if it was a DNS issue, but according to him it could not be a dns issue as we had tried connecting through different realms and the DNS would have changed for each realm.

Thanks for the assist though.

I have been having similar problems with Google and other international sites. The site would be intermittent, with it timing out and then you click the reload button and it loads immediately. It started happening after the SEACOM cable break off the east coast of Africa and I have queried this several times with the Tech Support email address and on the facebook site, (I have a collection of about 10 MWEB reference numbers) but with no improvement. It is fast reaching the point where I am considering moving to a different ISP as well.

I Joined MWEB just after they launched the Uncapped offering and it was sweet, for the first few weeks, but the service is now to congested and MWEB is not keeping up their Quality of Service.

I am willing to pay a premium, but then I want a premium service. Sadly according to what I see and read, the Business package is not doing much better, so ill probably go to one of the more expensive packages with a different ISP.

I'd be interested to see complaints from those on the more expensive addict/business products, I haven't come across any on here.

Most of the other similar complaints was on facebook, so I dont have the actual quote.
