MWEB Uncapped ADSL: A year later

I'm on the 4Mb/s and happy with the freedom of not having to worry about a cap.

I feel that the overall service (POTS+ADSL+ISP = R1085pm) is too expensive.
I don't blame MWEB, I blame Telkom for the POTS+ADSL fee, which is completely unjustified.
It costs the same for telkom to provide 384K as 4Mb/s.

We should be getting triple play for that amount - POTS+Internet+TV
 
Kudos MWeb :) It's been great experiencing the web as normally as we can for the past year or so.
 
I have been jumping around from ISP to ISP. From Telkom to mweb to Afrihost to IS to Openweb Back to IS and finally back on Mweb 4meg uncapped. I recently sent an email asking them about the high shapping on P2P during the day and this is what i got back :
"Shaped ADSL is achieved by performing protocol prioritization between different classes of traffic. The priority class comprises of the most popular/relevant protocols used by the base as a whole e.g. interactive activity such as browsing and mail, and it will always have priority access to the available capacity on the network. As the demand for priority traffic increases during peak times, non-priority traffic (e.g. torrents and news) is pushed back to ensure that the priority traffic/activities maintain a premium quality of service/experience.

We have no intention of shaping bandwidth more than is necessary in peak network conditions. Your bandwidth hungry apps will perform better during off-peak periods and everything else should perform acceptably anytime of the day or night. We are constantly looking at ways to optimize our network and fine tune the service to try and meet all our customer expectations.
"

Completely acceptable and understandable.
 
I have a 4MB uncapped and sync at 4096, I have excellent line quality and in the last 2 weeks have come down from 2.7MB/s download on speedtest.net to 1.2MB/s. After countless calls to Telkom and few to Mweb. Mweb tested me on another account to check that I was not being shapped and the speed remained 1.2MB/s. After logging so many faults and asking to speak to a supervisor (which they then put the phone down on you). I was told by these plonkers in the call centre that all they have to provide was 640K on a 4MB line. This is because their website says you will be dropped to a sync speed of 640K if your line cannot handle 4MB. My line sycs at 4096MB/s. After calling a contact in Cape Town who tested the network from there, she came back and said your dslams are full to capacity and the network in your area (011 867 exchange) is overloaded, I will not get anything better than this and you are not the only one complaining over this dslam. Time for problem to be rectified - when hell freezes over.

So don't blame Mweb for the Internet deteriorating, you know they they are doing their best. Telkom are just overloading everything. Are only chance is mobile giving an affordable uncapped service because sure as hell telkom won't.
 
I am very impressed with their Fixed IP Business solution. Allows me full VPN and hosting at my small business. Only little problem (still) is their peering agreements that are not in place with all other ISPs and market players in SA - thus I sometimes get time-outs when are forced to route internationally. Please MWeb Business - sort it out. Otherwise, great stable product for a small business user.
 
dropped mweb too. 384k uncapped is not broadband, but narrowband. it should cost R99 instead of R219. having gone from 384k to 4meg is a huge difference. i think mweb should drop their 4meg uncapped to R349. telkom should just drop the adsl line rental. don;t mind paying for the analogue line as i am using it to be conneceted. i must say amobia's deal of R650 for a 2mb uncapped package is not bad.
 
Mweb's next big thing needs to be no shaping! That will bring us in line with the rest of the world. People don't even know what you talking about if you talk about shaped and unshaped overseas.

Indeed.

I try to limit my downloading to local from their own news server or local steam content, the rest is usually routed through my Web Africa account (30GB/10Mbps capable through the MyBB special).

I probably push in the region of 80GB over their network, and I get exceptionally good speeds considering it's a 384K account, but I don't lose the additional overhead because I'm syncing at 2Mbps *spit*. That means I can get 45KB/s downloads instead of !37KB/s that I normally got over 384K.

They'll soon become more aware of their bandwidth use though - well, at least AT&T in the US.
150GB 'soft' cap, where you pay $10/50GB extra. Cheap, but no longer truly uncapped.

Other than increased ping times internationally on games, I can't say shaping has really ever affected me negatively.

My understanding was that until LLU happens, ISPs are not permitted to install lines into the home. Only Telkom (and Neotel according to Valerion in a previous post) are permitted to install lines, so saying that "MWeb refuses" to install lines is very misleading. The "all-inclusive" packages MWeb offers mean that the ADSL portion is billed by MWeb, who communicate with Telkom on behalf of the customer, but the line itself is still installed, maintained and owned by Telkom.

You just don't want it for free, don't you?

That said, from a fibre-to-the-home discussion - 10Mbps @ 20:1 contention for under R1000 sounds quite decent and actually do-able.

That's almost like 512Kbps guaranteed, but burstable if the other users back off a bit.
 
Gotta say i keep reading all these bad things being said about Mweb and i cant help but go ... You ungrateful BA$&#$*s, Mweb has turned internet around in this country , if they didn't "give it a try " no one would, and we'd still be enjoying our lightning fast 3 gig caps ...show some respect.

Well done to MWeb from me. Thanks to you I can now afford uncapped 4mb. Even though I'm not using MWeb, I know it's because of them that we now enjoy these offerings. I know it's not perfect by a long stretch, but it sure is better than before.
 
I've been with MWEB since Afrihost insalled their "pre-emptive throttling if we figure you'll use more than we deem neccessary over the next 30 days" rule, and only twice has it been anything but perfect for home + moderate downloading.

Unless and until someone comes out with something half the price, they have my loyalty ( much as Afrihost does, my 2gb account ticks over every month, even though I rarely use it.. )
 
Mweb is moving forward and has been since the uncapped launch. Not saying there haven't been problems or that the shaping is not a problem but atleast they are offering that works for the majority of the people and started a positive change in SA :)
 
i am a big Mweb fan. in december i used 350gb of data, no problems.

thier peering era was abit ballsy but it has worked out in the end.
