MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Hi SabreWolfy

We are running on reduced back up capacity: http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/NetworkStatusNotices.aspx

What downloads are you having speed issues with?

I have read that notice. GMail is slow, Twitter never finishes loading, a 2.5MB MP3 file comes down at BITS per second and won't finish, 40MB of Linux system updates come down at less than 4KB/s and won't complete, etc. For the whole day. :(

My point is that this is NO service. Throttle us all if you have to, but give us a reliable connection. I've spent the whole day baby-sitting websites and downloads, restarting them, etc. What a waste of my time.

Are we all sharing that one backup modem in Cape Town again?

I've restarted my router, etc. It's nothing to do with that.

Hi jeanres

MWEB members in all areas will experience degraded internet browsing, email and other internet services due to a SEACOM link failure.
Please note that shaping on non priority traffic will be in effect.

Yeah, 300bytes/s from Gmail for an attachment I need, and half the standard HTTP traffic is just useless, times out and dies.

This is utterly pathetic and I will most certainly be cancelling.

I know backbones can die, but it seems clear that MWEB have no backup infrastructure.

Sorry why are you repeating what I have said? Not to be rude bro, but hell, play open cards, or get my account canceled without the notice period!

Hi jeanres

Please advise if your international browsing is slow currently?

MWEB Guy: We know you are doing a difficult job under trying circumstances, but please don't patronise us. When international capacity is reduced to 1/3 during peak times, it is not 'degraded', it is congested, overwhelmed, slow and basically unusable.

I've being testing pings to the UK since 5.45am this morning (Sun 24th), and this was the only time I was able to get much done. By 9am packet loss was around 10%, and since midday it has been fluctuating in the 40-60% range. I have been able to get some simple pages to load by refreshing 3 or 4 times. Most pages most do not load at all.

Please tell me whether this matches your definition of degraded, or please stop 'copy and pasting' this from the network notices page. Your shaping policy clearly does not work, so rather don't refer to it...

Every time SEACOM goes down we have this fight with MWEB. I don't know the details of their backup, but it always seems inadequate, even when non-priority traffic is effectively stopped completely. A backup that does not even allow normal browsing and downloading, even if slowly, is no backup at all. MWEB, I understand SEACOM is down, etc., etc., but WHERE is the adequate backup? I don't want to download the interwebs when SEACOM is down, but I'd like to still be able to use my ADSL.

The pathetic throughput at the moment is so bad that I think it's a failure on MWEB's part to provide their part of the service.

MWEB when SEACOM is up = win.

MWEB when SEACOM is down = fail.

MWEB Guy, will MWEB waver a calendar month's notice to cancel in light of the lack of service?

Yes it is slow, also don't get me wrong bro I am upset, but not directly at you

International will be slow during this time of the Seacom outage as we running on reduced capacity.

Hi Mweb guy

My browsing also is not well... sometimes have to reload a page 3 times before it works.... Have not tried downloading, will only do that again after Seacom has been fixed.... Facebook is really slow... big time.

How long you think it will before browsing will be back to a workable standard?

Kind Regards

Is it only me or is Mweb replying with repeated obvious answers and asking the very same questions the users is complaining about?

So let me get this right on the new accounts... on the new 4MBPS uncapped account the can throttle the account ? or Am i just getting it wrong ?

Weekly JINX statistics graphs show that Sat & Sun are relatively quiet days. (This is only a rough guide, but shows half of the peak SA traffic). http://stats.jinx.net.za/showtotal.php

If this problem is not sorted by 8am on Monday, IMO there will be a sh*t-storm once traffic picks up as business users try to get online. I'm pretty sure MWeb know this, and are pressing hard to get a solution in place by then (however costly). Meanwhile domestic users don't have much leverage...

No, international traffic is erratic, unreliable and reduced to bits per second. I'd love to have "slow" international traffic right now.

Do you mean slow as in 7-10KB/sec - that's what I am getting for the whole of today - ticket CAS-1834115-XM84CK. And still no official response from MWeb - well would love to check Twitter or Facebook, but I am unable to connect there too.

Agreed. If mainly-domestic usage on a Sunday is this bad, MWEB better have a rabbit in the hat for tomorrow morning.

I get that the Seacom debacle is out of Mwebs hands and I will not lower myself to berating Mweb Guy like some idiots have but geezuz, when pages don't even load properly, that is piss poor redundancy of note.
