MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Can we get any indication as to what the level of repairs required is and how long one can be expected to have this poor performance? You know so we can go and acquire the appropriate amount of back up data on a capped service from another provider?

I obviously can't do work like this - and would like to attempt to figure out if I'm going to need 2,5 or 10gb of data to get through this!

p.s. I know I probably won't receive an answer that can help me in a tangible way :( lol

I get that the Seacom debacle is out of Mwebs hands and I will not lower myself to berating Mweb Guy like some idiots have but geezuz, when pages don't even load properly, that is piss poor redundancy of note.

Hey dude, LTNS! :D

I don't think any of us (not that I've noticed) are attacking MWEB Guy, but we are complaining to him about MWEB's lack of service.

We know it is Seacom but why does it seem Mweb the worst affected considering their uncapped is not the cheapest

+1 It's not MWEB Guy's fault, of course. I've been waiting for a few minutes now for a Google search results page to load -- is this "degraded" or "slow" performance?

What backup are we running on now? That old 56k modem in Cape Town? :(

was looking forward to a relaxing sunday afternoon with some youtube videos... but youtube at 0 - 3 KB/s unfortunately does not allow for that... hope this gets sorted out soon.

Yeah, my pro-rata Axxess purchase won't even process....... :erm:

Hey guys, who's a good local email provider in SA that doesn't have a horrible attachment size limit and so on? Just in case for times like these when I need to send/receive work stuff.

edit: Free, obviously.

Is it only me or is Mweb replying with repeated obvious answers and asking the very same questions the users is complaining about?

MWeb Guy is the front/face for this company on this forum and I feel sorry for him.
He ran out of answers long ago because his bosses have NOTHING, ZERO, ZILCH to say.

Maybe they all on holiday this weekend and couldn't care less.
Come Monday all hell will break lose - watch this company's share price this week

Any prepaid ADSL alternatives, which don't use SEACOM? Afrihost?

Afrihost uses MTN Biz which seems okay, I have a prepaid and it works fairly well at the moment - though it's only 1GB so I haven't really tested it with downloads.

For those that can not connect....

We've received an update from Seacom: Due to the number of affected cables the restoration work is taking longer than expected and is unlikely to be completed today.

Seacom are doing everything possible to restore services as soon as they can. We will update you again once we have further news.

Ok, fair enough. I used a 1GB prepaid with them ages ago and it worked OK. I need to arrange something like that as an alternative, because, with respect, MWEB is an utter FAIL at the moment :(

I read something here (?) a while ago that they now anticipate it will take two weeks to repair. I hope that's not the case... :(

I'm more than likely going to cancel and use Afrihost biz uncapped. if it sucks, I'll try something else.

Hi Sabre

I also do not hope so..... what about ppl that work from home and use MWEB to connect to work or run their business... This will kill them...

This was posted in the SEACOM STATEMENT thread

Read more carefully what was said in his statement, "In the coming week *OR TWO*". Though I'll be REAL surprised if it happens in that kinda time frame. Keep in mind the process of repairing a sub-sea fiber:

a.) A Cable ship has to sail to the affected point, and there aren't that many of these ships, no guarantee there is one really close by.
b.) They have to pull the cable up at the break point, both sides
c.) They have to clean up the break segment, then splice in a joining piece
d.) They have to test it all works and then drop the cable to the bottom again
e.) They have to normalize the power on the cable system

Also, keep in mind that break is, as far as I know, in Egyptian territorial waters, that means getting permissions to actually sail in there and do this work as well as far as I know (open to correction on this point).

Cable repairs are also pretty weather dependent. If the weather is bad in that area, they gotta wait till it clear before they can do the job.

If they get it done within a week, well, I'll be pretty damn happy, but realistically? Two weeks minimum, and potentially a lot longer (the fault that occurred in the gulf of Aden took 4 weeks iirc)
