MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Hey, I did a test that suppose to check if an isp shapes traffic from this website: http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php. I ran the Flash video test first for Afrihost then for Mweb on my 4meg line. The speed for mweb is much lower.

Afrihost:
Results for your host (####.access.mtnbusiness.co.za - ###):
Is your upload traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your uploads.

Is your download traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your downloads.
However, some of the measurements were affected by noise, which limits Glasnost ability to detect rate limiting.

Details:
There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your FlashVideo downloads. In our tests, downloads using control flows achieved up to 3310 Kbps while downloads using FlashVideo achieved up to 3308 Kbps.

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits downloads on port 8080 or 42125. In our tests, downloads on port 8080 achieved up to 3310 Kbps while downloads on port 42125 achieved up to 3133 Kbps.

Your ISP appears to allow higher bandwidth downloads on port 8080. In our tests, downloads on port 8080 achieved up to 2046 Kbps while downloads on port 56627 achieved up to 940 Kbps.

I'm going to cancel my 4meg Mweb uncapped today - haven't been able to stream YouTube for the past 3-4 weeks - just a horrible experience whether I stream from CNN or YouTube or Vimeo or Netflix, buffering takes longer than actual movie.

Who do you guys recommend? I've tried FNB - streaming is fantastic but they don't do uncapped. Should I go for Aftihost?

@MWEB guy

Kindly see my connection stats below. From what I understand from MWEB technical support, the 60.5dB line attenuation is way too high to keep a stable 2meg connection. Is there anything I can do to force Telkom to resolve this? I live in Risiville, Vereeniging.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 60.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 9.0 db

Thank you
Don

Why don't you just browse the ISP feedback for a while? Afrihost is as bad or worse than Mweb it seems. Mweb has gone down the toilet. Openweb seems to be the best for many people, especially their Gold Uncapped accounts. Also, you're probably going to be on Mweb for quite a while after cancelling on the 7th, so you have plenty of time to think it over.

Hi shakebake

The Youtube issues are resolved. Our network team identified the issue and resolved it. Have you rebooted the router yet?

Morning Donny31

Correct, the attenuation is very high and this will cause an unstable connection. Telkom will need to look at what is causing this and explain what the attenuation is so high.

PM me the MWEB account details so that I can do some checks on our side.

I am not the most tech savy person on here but even I know that these speeds are truly awful - joined mweb at the begining of last year only for uncapped 1mb but kept our line with afrihost decided to move the line over to mweb as well last month & this is the result not good at all!!!! where at afrihost our line speed was well over 1mb even though we were only paying for a 1mb line I think I was far to hasty & might be making a hasty exit back to afrihost with the whole package (any comments from mweb guy?)

slower than 81% of ZA?????

Mweb Guy????

A 1Mbps connection is slow though. Don't forget that fast business and 3G connections skew the results.

Hi Madaboutbullterriers

Sorry about the delayed.

I cheked on our side and everything is fine. I re-created the port and re-authed the account.Power down the router for 30 minutes.Monitor and test after that as well. I also changed a setting on the account, changed the setting from 'protected' to 'normal'.I suggest updating the anti-virus

MWEB, please unshape your networks permanently like Afrihost did! You are losing your customers to Afrihost/OpenWeb at much faster rate right now.

Hi MWEB Guy

I have emailed my cancellation letter to [email protected] but just want to check that they have recieved it. How long does it normally take for them to respond?

If I cancel today will my final day be the 7th April 2013? I love mweb but cannot justify getting a 2mb connection when another ISP offers 4mb uncapped unshaped for nearly the same price :(

EDIT: They have just replied. It looks like an auto response but at least I got a ref number.

Afrihost is confident that their additional capacity will more than handle the additional traffic, and after a week has passed they will re-assess their current shaping policies.

Hi Reaper84

Pity to see you leave.

Just to add, we require a calendar months notice period. Your account will only be closed at the end of April.

From now until the end of April is 7 weeks. How does that make sense?

Read slowly ... calendar month...not 30 days notice... BIG difference.

Ye - I would love to know which Isp does not milk/leech of their clients with this calendar month rubbish
I bet you they dont have a logical reason to do it other than to gain money

I just Googled the definition of a calendar month. It's a 12th of a calendar year, and legally, 30 days in the future minus one, and 29 or 31 days where applicable.
