MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

I've split my vote. :)
I use Mweb until the uncapped limit is reached, and another ISP for top-up.
There is just too much of a cost gap between standard and premium.
6Mbps Standard and 6Mbps Premium - R370 more
10Mbps Standard and 10Mbps Premium - R460 more

Looking to move a more mon+pop+2kids consumer friendly ISP.

The difference in cost is also affected by the difference in thresholds.

6Mbps standard threshold approximately 150GB vs 6Mbps Premium threshold approximately 600GB

10Mbps standard threshold approximately 250GB vs 10Mbps Premium threshold approximately 950GB

Afternoon, you do have the option to move to a capped package or mail box only to retain your MWEB email address.

@TheRedDevil18 the 30 Day rolling window is not that bad if you are on the ideal package suited for you needs

I see the 1gb package is R29 pm, How much is the mail box only ?, I only use 1 email address

To be fair, at 110GB per month we are unlikely to be the average mom, pops and two kids.

It is very likely that if there is no p2p, torrents etc then there certainly is a large degree of streaming going on. My guess would be some Netflix, Hulu or the like. I appreciate the fact that these stream perfectly at all times on MWeb and I manage my data usage and soft cap accordingly.

The "average" family that I know are not even familiar with these streaming services.
By "average", I mean someone who uses the internet 2.0
110GB is only 3.6GB per day or 0.9GB per family member.

We averaged about 180GB a month. Mom + Dad + Daughter + Netflix and other streaming services. That is about 5.8GB up to 6GB a day. But to be fair, steam also come's into the picture here and other things like Facebook and such.

The 2Mbps Premium package or 4Mbps Premium package would suit your needs.

You have a few options:

1. Pay more if your needs exceed that which you can afford
2. Change your needs so that they are in line with 4Mbps Standard
3. Change ISP to one that shapes which allows higher usage

To me it seems #1 is most pertinent? I mean if you have six people in your family but cannot afford to purchase an SUV, you cannot moan at the SUV manufacturer for an asking price higher than you can afford. Either make a plan or have one less child.

Are there any benefits to the 2Mbps Premium uncapped service? Zero-rated Steam or after-hours downloads, etc?

The differences, which are throttle limits, are listed in the spreadsheet embedded a few posts back.

Perhaps Premium's speed when throttled is better, too.

Does anyone know if Mweb news servers are now completely decommissioned?

I did receive a notice a while back that they are stopping their subscription to GigaNews or something like that (due to "lack of interest"), but I did not really know what that meant for content/binary downloaders.

Now I've not been able to connect to any news server for months, but since they are usually congested (lack of interest?), I don't want to just accept that they are no more...

I really thought that using news servers was saving them bandwidth, as it allows multiple people to download directly from their network, rather than from international sources, so I didn't believe that they would kills the servers.

Really frustrated with MWEB.

I've got a 2mb line and uncapped package with MWEB.
Over the past 3 days I've noticed debilitating speeds and running speedtest yields nothing faster than 0.21Mbps, so I'm getting speeds that average 20 kilobytes per second. I wouldn't want anyone to imagine just how slow that is!

I ring them up and the guy explains to me that I'm throttled and the whole 30 day rolling period story. Never knew about it before.

Now, while I understand the reason for throttling, I am furious as to why I was never notified of it before or even when it affects me. At least drop an email, send a sms to explain that you are approaching your threshold of 70 gigs for your 30 days and I would tell the family to budget internet usage till the counter resets or upgrade my account if need be. Simply put, I should know what I'm paying for! If they tell me it's uncapped, I'll use it as such. If they tell me I'll be throttled when I reach 70 gigs, then I'll use it as such.
(I hope they haven't been sending any notices to the mweb email address as I don't use that email. I can't see why MWEB can't send, like other ISP's, to my personal email address. Heck, I can't even access the mweb email. When I log in it just stays stuck on the signing you in page...)

Secondly, I moaned about being throttled from 250 plus kilobytes per second to 20 kilobytes per second. Would it not be reasonable to throttle the line speed to 50%??? From 2 meg speeds to 1 meg speeds?
I hop on to Youtube and it buffers on 144p! Really!? Is that the effective measure for crossing the threshold!?
Might as well call it a softcap service. Reach 70 gigs and you are then dropped to isdn speeds.

Throttling needs to be done. That I understand. BUT! At least notify your client and don't throttle as bad as it's currently being done.

Definitely going to cancel the data. I logged in to MWEB's sub standard "My Account" and clicked on cancel and it want's to bill me for this month and next month. 1 month notice, no problem. 1 month's payment, even if I'm not using the service, no problem. That's what I signed for. Nothing more. Going to call the Billing department tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.

Or pay R40 more per month for 40GB extra?

The news server was terminated on 24 October and communication was sent out to those who would have been affected by it before then.

Due to low uptake a decision had to be made but not just leave you in the cold we put together the following:

We have negotiated exclusive deals with Giganews for MWEB customers who wish to continue making use of the Usenet service. Exclusive to MWEB customers

1. A free 14 day trial
2. Receive 60% discount on the first 2 months of service on the Diamond Plan and 10% discount for the remainder of the subscription.
3. Receive 60% discount on all other Giganews plans for the first month and 10% discount for the remainder of the subscription

Why anyone would like to stay or go to MWeb is beyond me. I recently went left afrihost for MWeb and have had nothing but problems.
First off you get throttled so basically you get n 4mb line with 70gb data for R450. You can get n 100gb capped account at afrihost for less.
And their premium accounts is just ridiculously high.
I also had connections problems, where the line kept dropping.
And if you phone you have to speak to different departments, I got better help from SARS when phoning.
And if you used a capped account you get out of bundle charges should you go over your capped allocation.

I am no back at Afrihost and will not recommend any one going to MWeb. Worst ISP i found so far.

Afrihost has a 50GB capped account with another promotional 50GB thrown in until June 2015 for R199. The 4Mbps line would cost got an additional R279pm. Total cost R478.

The MWeb standard 4Mbps uncapped account actually has around a 110GB throttle soft cap. Total cost including ADSL line rental R449pm. So cheaper, more data and no hard cap.

Something not quite right with your maths.

As for the call centre, never had to use them, the service and response times on here and twitter are exceptional. Even after hours and on weekends.

Can any of the experts please give me advice. I am with Mweb 1 Mbps Premium (R199) and ensure that I just stay under my allowable 100 gb's before throttling. I have been with them for two years. My line is 2 mbps. I was thinking of upgrading the data only to the 4 mbps Standard (R239) and leave the line at 2 Mbps as is. Under this package my limit will be 110 Gb's and I will be able to use my full line speed of 2 mbps. When trying to do this I see that it is "not available to existing customers". Only alternative is move to Afrihost where I used to be and hope that their service has improved and will not deteriorate with too many joining them. A good package they advertise is the 50 gb + 50gb for R199.
How difficult is it to move your line from Mweb back to Telkom or Afrihost? When is the best time time of the month to move if you are not on contract?
Thank you.

You can do that. I did.

Thank you for the reply. I am attaching the page where they say it is not available to existing customers. When did you change and did you visit one of their shops to change? I would like to stay as the ISP story in SA is a game where the best one of today will be down the line in six months time as the others catch up and surpass.
