MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

Any reason I am getting a CT based IP when my closest POP is DBN ?

YOu can change your username realm to force a new IP connection.

@ Mwebguy can you please find out for me if there is any issues cause my international browsing feels a bit slow. Only to some websites. When pinging it's fine but browsing a bit slow. I tried rebooting pc and router still having issues. I'm from Pretoria

Hi Nelis

I assume it's the home connect account you having issues with and have checked it and refreshed. No issues found on it.

have you had the line checked with Telkom?

YES. no haven't phoned telkom yet. But when doing speedtest my speed seems fine. It's mainly torrenting and browsing that's slow but like i said when doing speedtest ping and speed seems fine

Thanks for the info, the torrent speeds aren't guaranteed on a shaped account so the speeds will vary as it receives the lowest priority.
As for the browsing, is this your experience while the torrents are running in the background?
If so, try to stop all other active traffic or other devices connected to the router then check your experience to see what it's like.

no I stop everything and only do browsing then it's slow but for now it's fine.

Hi MWeb Guy

I'm considering moving from Afrihost to take advantage of the current MWeb offer of a 6Mbps line, uncapped with free modem. I have a couple of questions:

1. I am on a 2Mbps line at the moment, and my line supports up to 4mbps, but after doing the tests here, I am shown I could get up to 23798kbps. I am very close to the exchange, have 8.5db downstream attenuation and 27.0db SNR downstream margin which is good. I am aware that there are other factors that may influence the actual speed, but I'm not sure how to check this with Telkom. I need to know that I can safely upgrade to 6mbps and get the full advantage.
2. Could you supply me with a link or more details on the free modem? This article mentions that a high quality router will help with SNR when increasing the line speed, and in the past I have had issues with my (5 year old Billion) router rebooting often.
3. I want to test your service with the free 7 day trial - will I only be able to use the 2Mbps test?

Thanks in advance,
Toni

Lately I've realised that the internet is ridiculously slow over weekends and in the evenings. Early mornings however it's fine - I even stream YouTube to my TV in HD. In the evenings, I battle just to browse the internet! As a Premium Uncapped subscriber, been paying you guys for many years now, I find it unacceptable.
My line doesn't have any problems.

Hi

If you would like I could arrange for a consultant to contact you tomorrow and assist with getting you connected on a 4mbps trial account.
That way you could test the network and see what the experience is like first hand.
We cannot guarantee that your line would be able to reach 6mbps as your exchange may only support speeds of upto 4mbps.
I'm not saying that it can only handle 4mbps, I'm just pointing it out to you.
More info one the product can be found here.

Hi

Do you have comparative test results to provide me for when the issue occurs and when it is normal.
I'd like to see how the speeds differ during the day to at night when the issue occurs.
Also send me trace route results if you can, one done when the problem occurs and one when it is fine.

Thanks for the quick response. I would like to do a trial. I did visit that link earlier, but I cannot find anything on the hardware specs, just a very general blurb.

Hi Mwebguy

Decided to post my results here instead of in a private message (note I've send you a message earlier in the week).

I've been experiencing terrible intermittend internet since last Friday. When doing a speedtest it seems fine for the first second and then the speed drops terribly to almost nothing. Sometimes it disconnects completely and the test can't even finish. Things I have done :

Changed filter
Tested with Telkom account - same issue thus not a MWEB issue
Had Telkom do a port reset
You have re-authorised my account

tracert results :

Was about to try different modem, but noticed my stats :

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (dB): 135 130
Attenuation (dB): 240 150
Output Power (dBm): 189 113
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 6336 976
Rate (Kbps): 4096 640
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0.13 0.25

So based on this my attenuation rate is the issue here, right, and I will need to log a Telkom fault? Please confirm.

Will this also be the reason for noise on my line when listening to the handset?

Edit : Notice I am still on the telkom account. Will change back to MWEB and post another tracert, although I think I've confirmed that the tracert's seem fine.

Yes, 100% a line fault.

Should've mentioned that the noise on my line has always been there and I did once have a Telkom technician here for that. I wasn't at home when he came to have a look but the feedback I had was that it is my handset that is the issue. I am however convinced that that is not the issue (but don't have another phone to test and not going to buy one as I don't use my landline for phonecalls).

There are days when the line is clear but most days it has a terrible noise.

But I will log a fault with them. Fortunately work close to home nowadays which makes it a hell of a lot easier to sort the logistics of fault logging.

Thanks

Good morning

Seeing as you have tested this with the Telkom details and the same thing is happening it is likely that the trouble is from Telkom side

Internet slow

Internet is ridiculously slow again tonight on all my PC’s.

I wasn’t even able to access Speedtest.net in order to run a speed test. However I did run a Trace Route.. Pings appear to be extremely slow, especially from the second ping.
