MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

I most certainly will pass this on to management

Many thanks. Hope to soon see ADSL bandwidth pricing for fibre. At this point, for me, there's no benefit of upgrading because ADSL bandwidth is far more affordable. I realise that fibre would give me many times the download/upload speed. I understand that fibre is new and that the network cost is subsidised by end users like myself. Truth is my ADSL with MWEB is rock solid, and at those prices it just does not make sense to change to fibre, as much as I'd like to.

I second PostmanPot. We're all just waiting for the fibre and deployment will be quite rapid, from June to year end. People are holding out for the prices from MWeb, Telkom and Cybersmart and then will compare with the current 6 providers and make their moves. Even with like-for-like pricing, I see a strong brand-pull to switch to fibre as the teams start to deploy down each street. The ADSL cancellations will (in my estimation) take longer than one might expect to start coming through, but once they start to gain momentum it will be too late to intervene.

Hi,

We've been having terrible performance on our MWEB line (located in constantia) lately and I'm busy looking up what the cause/solution could be. I think we are currently on a standard account, but we have a home office setup with several users and very high usage so it's very likely (or certain) that we are being throttled, although the line is performing at about 10-20% of capacity rather than the 50% it should be, if we were being throttled.

So I have a few questions:
Are the business accounts throttled at all? Fair being fair, I understand that being a heavy user I will have to pay more and I am happy to pay more for a line as long as it performs as it should.

What accounts to mweb offer that are suitable for heavy users that will not be throttled (at 4mb or 10mb speeds)?

Is there somewhere I can check whether we are being throttled, and where our usage lies compared to "acceptable use" paramaters?

The packages listed here: http://www.mweb.co.za/small-business-internet-connection/packages/bundles.aspx all include things such as web hosting and advertising that we do not need or want. Are there business/heavy usage accounts that we can sign up for that do not include this fluff?

What is the difference between the Standard and Premium Uncapped ADSL accounts?

Thanks.

Interesting. I am in Constantia and tried MWeb last week and also experienced slow line speeds (by slow I mean 1.8-2.6Mbps on a 4mbps line). I had not used it much as I purposely did the mweb speedtest following very low usage. During 3 calls with MWeb I was assured that MWeb had no experience of issues in Constantia. I even followed their process and got the node reset by Telkom etc. I tried another provider and the line speed was over 3mbps.

What i find particularly strange is that, if I do a speedtest it starts at ~2-3Mbps and then drops down to about 0.22Mbps after 2-3 seconds. Our upload speed is more or less correct at 0.3Mbps throughout.

What does a normal www.speedtest.net result in?

What about SAIX? http://capetown.spdtst.saix.net/

Lastly, try the FTP download (64MB), and let us know what consistent speed you get. http://www.saix.net/cgi-bin/speed_test_servers.pl

Please PM me your MWEB account details, so that I can look into this for you. Please also mention your preferred contact number our Sales team can ring you on to chat about your Sales related questions.

You can monitor your usage online via our My Account page: https://myaccount.mweb.co.za/

Our premium uncapped options give access to larger download thresholds, allowing you to download more.

I tried another provider and the line speed was over 3mbps.

Which alternate provider did you test connectivity with? If it was with the Telkom guest account, you would only have had access to the saix.net website (i.e. all other 'net activity would have halted) allowing you to reach higher download speeds.

EDIT: please PM me your MWEB account details so that I can look into this for you.

OpenWeb, AFAIK.

Hi. I tried my Afrihost bundle account and Openweb (didn't capture the Afrihost screenshot though) and the speedtests included MWeb-CapeTown.

I will PM you, although the account is no longer active

Here's a normal speedtest:

Here's the graph showing the dip:

That dip is 100% reproduceable. I wondered whether it's because of contention on our LAN but it happens even if I unplug everyone else.

SAIX's speedtest hangs at "preparing download test" but pings just fine at 20ms.

FTP download sits between 10kB-20kB/s

Will pm account details now, thanks. Why are you responding to clients at 10.30 pm :O doesn't mweb guy sleep??

So there are no accounts that guarantee unthrottled internet access? What do if your business is reliant on the internet? Or if your employees are addicted to youtube??? :)

We do offer unshaped package which does not have throttling imposed on it :)

Ok after looking at our account details we are throttled due to our heavy usage like I said, we are happy to pay more for fast stable internet. Can you please explain to me the difference between these two packages:

http://www.mweb.co.za/small-business-internet-connection/adsl/10mbps-uncapped-shaped-adsl.aspx
(Small business uncapped)

and the Premium 10mbps

http://www.mweb.co.za/internet-conn...capped-adsl/10mbps-premium-uncapped-adsl.aspx

Are these costs the same (or it seems the business does not include line rental in the price)?

Also, is the small business line throttled as well? We don't need unshaped internet, but we definitely need unthrottled internet. Otherwise our only option might be the 10Mbps or 4Mpbs uncapped unshaped.

EDIT: Is there somewhere we can get an indication of when accounts start to get throttled, or does this happen "at mweb's discretion"?

You can monitor your usage online via our My Account page (https://myaccount.mweb.co.za/). The download threshold for your package is approximately 110GB over a 30 day rolling window, so you'd have to ensure that your usage for the past 30 days doesn't exceed said threshold to avoid throttling.

Hi Mweb Guy (or any other MyBB people),

Before I start, I did email your [email protected] 4 days ago and got a ticket number but no response yet: [REF# 20150517000227 ]

Account No: 1248595

We have a 4Mb Premium Uncapped account, we also have the FON router. We are experiencing something strange. Our connection to the internet dies. Now that is not something new, but how it happens is weird... I did some tests to help with the problem.

To fix the problem we have to restart the router, then it establishes a new connections and everything is working again. But we have to do this sometimes every hour and sometimes every day. It is so bad, that we have a fixed routine now to restart the router in the morning before we need to start using the internet.

When our internet is "dead":
  • I can still ping the Mweb Gateway, and DNS servers.
  • I cannot ping anything else, even our VPS server that is with Mweb.
  • I cannot resolve any DNS queries.
  • Any existing connection ie. a Skype Video call, keep on working even after the internet "died" for any new connections.

I did a few pings, nslookup and traceroutes and have attached an image for that:

I also managed to get a tracert through to our VPS just when the internet died this morning. I then did another traceroute after a restart of the router, and you can see that the path is different:

Please help, this has been a problem since somewhere from November 2014. I'm trying my luck with you, after which I will need to look for another provider.

Hi,

I'm looking to move ISP and would like to know how the uncapped line performs for streaming and occasional torrents. Will you get throttled on real time servces as streaming browsing? How much download do you have on a 10 Mbit line.

Thanks for sharing.
