So on the 1st of June, 384K will be upgraded to 1mb by Telkom for free, right? :P

Our understanding from the source at Telkom is that as from 1 June 384->1Mb and 1Mb->2Mb will be done. Chances are it will be done in stages though.

4mb to 10mb would be nice :D but sadly I dought it would happen :P

Hi, I am maxing out at about 60kB/s for torrents in the last few days, 70kB/s night time. I am on 4Mb Uncapped R539, though I usually get about 200kB/s in the day and 410 to 420kB/s from about 8PM.

It's not related to the torrent files, I tested everything.

HTTP seems to be normal, 25ms ping, 3.28 down, 0.38 up, speedtest.net.

I'm having the oddest problem. I'm on a Telkom line with an MWEB uncapped 4 meg account that I usually have no issues with. Today since around 5pm the internet connectivity has been freezing for about 30 seconds, then the ADSL line has been losing sync. When the ADSL re-syncs, about 50% of the time the internet link is restored, and the other 50% of the time I get an authentication failure. This has been happening continuously at intervals of 2 to 10 minutes ever since. The *really* odd part is, when I swtiched over to an old capped Axxess account I keep around for emergencies, the internet link is rock solid and the ADSL doesn't lose sync - the connection has been totally stable on th Axxess account for the past 45 minutes.

Is there any chance that one of the MWEB folks on here could take a look and see if there's anything wrong with the account settings? I'll happily provide my connection info via a PM.

thanks in advance!

A lot of people are complaining about this. Been happening for over a month now. Mweb don't care they say its shaping and that P2P gets lowest priority on the network. Ive got 2 torrents with thousands of seeds that have not been faster than 50kb/s at any time of the day/night. Also complaining wont help because all they will do is link you to a post that Will@Mweb made saying they don't care and wont stop shaping.

Hi Prof.

You say you are maxing out at night time, please can you let me know roughly the time as you also mention that from about 8pm you get speed of 410/420kB/s?

Hi MostlySatisfied

Please can you PM me the MWEB account details in order for me to look into it from our side.

I have had the same experience in the last few weeks so I decided to do a proper test just to see for myself how the shaping seems to work.
Yesterday evening I lined up a bunch of well seeded torrents for the test. I checked the speed this morning at 7:00. I was happy to see it was running full speed around 400KB/s. At 8:00 I saw it start to drop. At 8:10 it was down to 300KB/s. At 9:00 it was doing around 150KB/s and now at 10:00 it is doing between 60-90KB/s. I will be happy with the speeds if it doesn't drop further as I understand it has to be shaped throughout the day when the country's internet usage goes up. My only concern is that a friend of mine with a 1meg uncapped is currently getting the same speeds that I'm getting on the 4meg uncapped.

Just a bit of info. Use it, don't use it.

Edit:
And I'm also wondering why the speed suddenly dropped in the last few weeks during the day. I used to get full speed some days and minimum 150KB/s on well seeded torrents.

Hi Foeffie

Thank you for the information you provided.

As mentioned previously, speeds will flucuate and are not guaranteed.

Also - you can read this post from Will@Mweb relating to torrent speed.

Hi Vorador

Please configure router with the following details:

User: guest@telkomadsl

Pass: guest

Then go to www.saix.net and do a speed test

Last Result:
Download Speed: 858 kbps (107.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 424 kbps (53 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 22 ms
30 May 2012 02:18:25 PM

Please provide me your MWEB results on the saix speed test?

It's probably closer to 9PM until the next morning 8AM that I used to get very close to full line speed, which was very nice. I've managed to get 100kB/s max around 11PM last night, but not for very long.

Something strange is happening with the P2P shaping, my shaping has never been this severe in day time and I have always had at least 360kB/s, most of the time more than 400kB/s later in the evening.

EDIT: 360kB/s in the night time when it is slower is what I used to get. 240kB/s is the day time is what I used to get.
I now max out out at 100kB/s briefly near midnight.

I see from Will's post that you're getting extra bandwidth Friday, maybe it will improve then?
