MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hi Mweb Guy

Thanks again for your help yesterday. Someone at Mweb figured out that Telkom had set my line speed at 10Mb and the line couldn't handle that. According to the person that called us about an hour ago, they were supposed to set it at 4Mb (not that I ever got more than 4Mb anyway, during the times the internet was working).

The ADSL light is still flashing very quickly although there are now times when the light will be solid and the internet will still work. Previously, whenever the light was solid then the internet would be down. It would only work when the light was flashing very quickly.

Most importantly, the internet appears to be working at all times now. I no longer have that process of torrents and browsing working to only torrents working to nothing working.

Like the posts above, I am however struggling to get above 1Mb. I've tried torrents, websites and downloading iTunes. Since there are others with this issue, perhaps it's a more general problem and not related to my specific recent issues.

My speedtests are fine though. Ping's at 20-30 and download speed is about 3.5Mb.

Also, the huge fluctuations when pinging my router seems to have been resolved.

I can now try to get my speed up and sort out the flashing ADSL light but at least I have constant internet again! Thank you for that.:)

All international downloads p2p and normal, tried drivers from Nvidia, a few files from filehippo, nothing exceeds 1Mb. Tried a file from tenet mirror in IDM got full speed. Youtube videos get full line speed. Nntp cached on mweb server full line speed.

Hi Guys,

@Cybershark - So it's only the international that's slow if I understand you correctly.

@dasco144 - Are your issue's you getting similar to those of Cybershark?
Please let me know if it's only international or local as well.

kind regards,
MWEB Guy

Yes I am getting similar issues but with all my traffic not just international.

@MWEB Guy, yes, only international http downloads, although I haven't tested locally beyond mirror.tenet.

Good Afternoon Everyone

Please note that we will be carrying out some planned maintenance in our JHB data centre tonight starting at 22h00 and extending to 04h00 on Saturday morning. We apologize for the short notice on this.

During the change window services hosted in our JHB data centre, may become intermittently unavailable. This includes mail servers, hosted websites, virtual servers, nntp news and JHB based game servers. ADSL connectivity will be unaffected by this change.

Kind Regards,

MWEB Operations

@dasco144 - please can you PM me traceroutes in order for me to look further into this from our side.

@cybershark - what sort of downloads are they, is it news, torrents? Is there anything running in the background? Do you have more than 1 pc connected?

As stated above, http international downloads(Nvidia drivers / filehippo / dropbox/ rapidshare), as I said haven't tested local http downloads other than from mirror.tenet, nntp I use mweb, don't often use torrents.

Nothing running in the background that's downloading.

Only 1 pc is connected.

One click hosted sites are shaped on our network, example rapidshare. I would advise monitoring during the course of the evening and keep me updated.

Hi MwebGuy,

Is it normal that a line attenuation of 59dB will result in my speed being reduced by more than half? I am on a 1Mb line and Telkom claim that there are no issues on the line, so I'm assuming it's the attenuation and there is nothing that we can do about it?

All speedtests consistently state that I am connection between 300 and 400...

Thank you.

...no need my details then. We are on file it seems

/makes note to behave ;)

I'm thinking of just leaving my ADSL and go with something like h8ta or so. I heard it's super fast and stable. and 10GB for only R200 I think is really good
