MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Thanks MWEB Guy for the super fast response. Things seem better on my line now. I'll keep you posted.

Quick question about youtube. I understand that when for example I open a youtube video that if it is not already cached to the MWEB local cache server it is then pulled and cached there.

My issue with the system is that a lot of time (not always) I get really low speeds on my 1Mb line, around 20-30KB/s while it caches to your servers, then after sometime the speed normalises.

Now I don't have a major issue with this if it doesn't take too long, but sometimes it seems to never speed up and I'm forced to dial into another ISP. For reference I usually only watch youtube after I get home from work so after 5pm. I just wish youtube speeds were more consistent since if its running at anything less than full speed I can't let it stream.

I remember :) It's great to see you're back with us again :D

*edit*

I see you were talking to MWEB Guy about a streaming problem further up the page - anything I can help with?

Woops, sorry, didn't see that you'd responded.

I'm actually quite glad to be back :)

Intending on staying a bit longer this time :D

Regarding the streaming problem, a consultant contacted me at around 08:30 this morning. Explained my problem to him, sent him some pathpings, tracerts and pings to YouTube.com. Not entirely sure it'd help but we'll see.

For the moment things are back to normal: I can stream 360p without any problems but 720p is still impossible. Switch to Afrihost and 720p streams without a hitch.

Also glad to still be remembered :3

My MWEB is down :(

Hi ldmelsa

Doesn't seem to be anything wrong at the moment. Checked the line readings as we and everything seems fine. Have you rebooted your router yet?

Hi Isengard

Firstly in terms of YouTube performance in general video streams are given the highest priority possible so whether you're pulling it directly from YouTube.com, or from cached content you really shouldn't be seeing any poor performance in this area.

Secondly in terms of the caching I wouldn't imagine that the content being written to cache would have a performance impact for the customer during playback. I'd have to clarify with our engineers, however I don't believe that YouTube content is actually written to our general caching solution as we have dedicated Google caches deployed on our network which handle this content.

I am a bit concerned as both you and Lycanthrope have mentioned poor streaming performance and that certainly shouldn't be the case so I'll bring this to the attention of our engineers and ask them to make sure some problem hasn't crept in in this area.

Regards
Will

Just to let you know, MWeb Guy, my ADSL is working fine after your suggestions and assistance. Thank you.

Am I safe to assume that my PC will not know of these servers, unless I use your DNS, or is that automatically provisioned for ?

That's a good point. My router automatically uses GoogleDNS, it's saved my hide many a time.

Anthro you're correct and raise a very good point. When it comes to content caches of this nature, or CDN nodes on our network the redirection to that content happens at the DNS level so it's essential to use our auto assigned DNS addresses to get the full benefit.

I also need to correct myself in that we currently have Google caches deployed on the JHB leg of our network, but the Cape Town servers are not in production yet, however they should be within the next few weeks.

We also have some other really nice improvements in the pipeline over the next few months with additional CDN connections coming online that will speed up some of those patch/update downloads which can occasionally cause a bit of frustration.

Hi I'm downloading Diablo 3 beta now. The problem is that the download speed is 20kBps :( Is it being shaped right now?

It will take this whole weekend to finish downloading the beta (2.8GB) :(

My line speed is 384K.

What's wrong with my internet connect? :( Do I need to open certain ports? Or just accept that my 384K line sucks and move on?

Hey at least yours is downloading. Mine keeps dying randomly on any account I try.

It's on :(

It doesn't make a difference at all.

EDIT: I don't have a closed beta key so it's pointless to download D3 beta if it will be fully downloaded after this weekend because the beta is available to the public for the whole weekend only.)

I have tested your account and line and everything looks good.
I have re-authed your accout to see if this assists.
