MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

That's why I don't even really like to call it shaping anymore - it's more accurate to call it QoS :) I've left downloads running while playing BF3 and everything just sorts itself out.

Correct. Quality of Service is just amazing for multi-protocol use.
But it sucks when I'm trying to browse and download Guild Wars 2 at the same time (they decided to use port80 this time) :o

With the current price of hard drives there's no reason for you to worry :D

Sad, but true although they do seem to be coming down again. I must say I was quite surprised to see how cheap SSD's are getting - all the cool kids are getting them to run their OS and games off.

Yes. But there is very little performance incentive in gaming with a SSD. It's of more use for the OS.

Once you're in game no, but things like map load times are drastically reduced.

Hey
Its a new patch for Shogun 2. Might be that the steam servers are just congested, but last night the game was updating at 100k mark for most of the night, then this morning it just hovers around the 40k. So yeah, smacks of shaping :p

If it's fresh content there's also some lag time between when it gets released and deploying it to the local steam caches on our network. The caches are very much a black box solution so we have no control as to what content Valve deploys to them, or how long it takes.

On that note check your steam configuration and make sure that you are specifically pointing to the MWEB servers as this should provide you the best performance on those downloads.

/me smacks MWEB Guy upside the head for getting it wrong :D This is not correct guys, steam downloads would get the same priority as any normal http download - it is not p2p.

hahaha, lol. Thanks Will. Was pretty sure steam is NOT p2p, but normal http. Either way mweb is shaping my line heavily while I download the patch, currently now at 15kb, down from 40kb earlier this morning and 100kb last night. Its downloaded over 1.7 gigs out of 4gigs, so going at 15kb is not okay considering how long it will take to finish the update. So now, WHY am I being shaped for using steam? Is there heavy congestion on the mweb network?

Nevermind, I see it in seetings, its on mweb JHB. There is also an option for mweb Cape Town. Should I try that one?

Depending on where you are yes, try the one that's closest to you, but they should both give you decent performance.

I actually have a meeting with the Gamezone team in a few minutes so I'll ask them to just do a health check on those caches and make sure there aren't any issues.

What you may be experiencing though is that the content you're pulling hasn't been cached locally yet, in which case you're getting pot luck from an international source and in my experience the speeds can fluctuate quite a bit on those.

Edit:

If you're using Windows 7 look at the network section under performance monitor. You should be able to see what source you are downloading from under the active TCP connections

Thanks for the help, i'm not sure how to read the TCP connection, i.e, what source i'm downloading from. I've attached a link to a screen shot

You can see the hostname - it's from London.
You forced your Steam to use (or prefer, rather) local sources, right?
Also, are you using Mweb DNS or other DNS servers?

Okay, here's a better pic with all my steam settings set, http://s1187.photobucket.com/albums/z391/Goefells/?action=view&current=Networkconnections-1.png . I would believe that the steam cache is a bit delayed, but the evidence points to shaping as in "non shaped hours" like last night where I was getting full speed, whereas this morning and now the speeds are much slower, i.e, during shaped hours. SO sorry, but the evidence points to shaping more likely than steam cache not being available locally yet.

Well Will says that it is in the same category as http, so shaping technically shouldn't be an issue. I don't have Steam installed at the moment so I can't test for myself.

To either WILL , MWEB Guy, please answer the following:

1. Are Uncapped test accounts available at any time of the year, and how long do you allow for them to be used (how many days testing) ?

2. I've read a few threads relating to the use of VPN's on Uncapped, but they're from last year.
I don't know much about the subject (though I do use Radmin); am I correct in presuming Radmin falls into this category ? Does the port # I'm using make any difference ?

Then, (if problematic) is it still such an issue with more bandwidth coming on line (Eassy cable) ?

Assuming I were to take out the R199/month Uncapped a/c on a 1Meg line, and only a max of 10% of what I used was for Radmin use, would MWeb still feel compelled to send out one of those warning letters to me to cancel the a/c, which I've read about ?

I'd probably need to use between 5 - 10 GB per month on Radmin; at the moment closer to 5.
The rest would be for downloads, streaming etc.

Please supply me with the necessary info. on all the above, ASAP.

Hi I O U

1. There is no end date regarding the trial account, but for now it is a 7 days trial account.

2. You will be able to make use of VPN's with the uncapped account. It depends what you will be doing with it though. As long as you are abiding with the AUP everything will be fine.

@MWEB Guy
Been wanting to ask you, and I keep on forgetting :o

When I activated my free uncapped hosting I chose the mysql/php one instead of the MSsql/.net one... I haven't used it yet. Is it possible to still change it to the Microsoft one?

Hi froot

I checked the account and noticed that you activated the Unix platform. In order to use the MS SQL, you will need to change the platform to Windows.

Do you wish to go ahead with the change of platforms?

Yes, that would be awesome, thanks :)
