Hi MWEB Guy. Could you please let me know if you guys are currently having problems with connectivity to Gmail servers (SMTP and IMAP). I'm able to send emails from non-Gmail SMTP servers but can't from Gmail ones. IMAP is also very slow from Gmail. Googling if it's their fault says nothing, which I take to mean a no.

Hi UnUnOctium

I have not picked up any trouble connection to Gmail servers. I have tested this and I am able to access it.

Got the exact same thing my side. Connection to Gmail via POP3, SMTP and IMAP very slow. Connection to Web Interface (i.e. www.gmail.com) perfect.

Interesting. You didn't use the HTTP interface, right? I noticed that using the Gmail web interface is fine but if you want to use the SMTP server from say, Thunderbird, it connects to the server but then times out. I've ruled out all local factors since non-Google SMTP works perfectly and also Google IMAP is slowed down. Also ruled out the local machine since mobile phone has same issues and when forcing mobile phone to use HSPA instead of WiFi/DSL connection there are no problems.

TBH it seems like an upper level issue such as weird firewalling/routing with the brunt of the effect on an outgoing connection.

I have tested this with an MWEB connection and a Telkom connection and I am getting the same slow speeds.
I believe it could be a Gmail related problem.

Hi guys

I am experiencing exactly same problems this morning at the office on a Business account. Outlook and Mail app keep timing out to Gmail servers. I've got Google Apps for business set up for our domain so everyone is currently freaking out at work.

Mweb - pls assist.

I have checked on our side and everything looks good. After testing with a MWEB connection and a Telkom connection and I am experiencing the same thing. This leads me to believe it can be gmail related.
 
I am also having the exact same problem. Gmail can't download my emails from my mweb addresses:
I can log in on the mweb web based mail server but also with slow speed

Mail fetch history for "******@mweb.co.za"
Connection Error. Mail from this account has not been retrieved since 8:55 am.

I am having exactly the same issues on my side too. Must be gmail related issue then.... Please all let us know if you find out anymore info on this. :)

Thanks Hein, but if you don't mind I'll actually hold off on now as I've just had confirmation from our engineers that there seems to be an upstream problem with Google peering again, which would account for slow response times and timeouts on these services.

We'll update you here if we get any feedback on the specifics of the problem.
 
I also noticed that I am having the same problem with my other email addresses from other local providers
 
Having the same gmail problems in CT. Can't send and receive via thunderbird but gmail.com works fine.
