Hi Mweb Guy.

I'm trying to download something from the Games for Windows Live marketplace but it's going at 12kb/s.

Below is a traceroute to the IP GFWL is connecting to when downloading:

I switched to my Afrihost Account and experienced this download at 108kb/s.

Are you only getting these speeds on that download?
Have you tried downloading something from a different server?
Just to compare the types of speeds.

Other downloads are going fast, it's only this download that is going slow. I do not believe it is a server side issue, as my Afrihost account goes at 108kb/s on this exact download.

Good Morning XperiAnce, we do not have a local Akamai node and fetch the data via our international links. That will explain the difference in speed.
 
Morning Mweb Guy - is there a reason Torrents (which are also fetched internationally) are less shaped at night and can achieve full line speed whereas my download from a legitimate purchase was shaped to 20kb/s and not given any extra bandwidth?

Are you referring to the Akamai data and torrents? If you are, sometimes your torrents are cached locally and this can impact on speeds. Whereas we always fetch Akamai content internationally.
 
Yes, just wondering why Mweb does not have a local Akamai node, or why access to other local Akamai nodes are not available through Peering (if I understand the concept correctly).

From what I can tell, Akamai have a 60% share of the CDN network (according to a quick google search) - would it not make sense to have a local Akamai node to allow Mweb Customers to have access to such content using local bandwidth, reducing the amount of International Bandwidth MWEB would have to utilize.

You're absolutely right it would make sense for us to have these CDN nodes available, which is why the short answer to your question is "coming soon to a cinema near you" :)

I can't discuss the specifics of which CDN's and the exact timelines yet, but we are very excited about getting this up and running and it will be sooner rather than later.

Basically been experiencing erratic pings on dota2 (spiking from 220 - 300ms) previously I got a very solid 190 - 220ms all the time. I also occasionally get a red writing which means I have to completely disconnect from the game. I've bought both a webafrica and afrihost capped account, and they both give me a very steady 190-220 ms ping, and no red writing.

Good Morning SquirellyWrath, please provide me your MWEB account details. Also note that capped accounts operate different to shaped accounts.

Make sure you're not using Google DNS - it has news.mweb.co.za cached incorrectly.

I just noticed that we don't use GoogleDNS at the office.

I changed my DNS Settings to my OpenDNS account nameservers and can connect 100% now.

Just be careful of doing it this way. There is a server cluster in JHB and CPT and they are rerouted dynamically via DNS and regionally restricted.

The idea was to provide a better experience by putting the servers closer to the users, but some clever people thought they could double their news fun by connecting to both IPs simultaneously - hence the restriction :D
 
Hi

For the past 3 days or so, I've been getting erratic ping to Dota2 and Diablo 3. Pingtest also shows packet loss, and high pings.
