Mweb uncapped ADSL thresholds and throttling

so the rumours might be true then, mweb don't have the capacity

None of the ISPs do, really - To get acceptable service all month long, I've had to move to a business uncapped (Afrihost) account, after working my way through most the consumer-grade ones on various ISPs.

Those numbers are BS. I get throttled at around 50 gigs - then I can't even stream youtube. On a Premium 4mb account (not getting the 400 they claim).

You looking at the month amount or the 30 day rolling? I have the 4 Meg standard and normally go between 70-100 Gigs and I have never beem throttled

Edit: The problem I have with them is that they state that they prioritize gaming but I can't play dota 2 after work. Only between 0h00 and 6h00 my line is fast enough to game online without lag. And then you can't use your FON router to dail up to a different account without some trouble.

You don't get capped after you hit the threshold, but your speeds get throttled.

Then it seems to me they should, in all honesty, be advertising the service as soft capped or something. The thresholds should have been advertised from the get-go since the AUP changes.

I moved over end of August so I'm not bothered personally, but MWEB really need to learn how to not piss off their user base.

nice article, been a while

unfortunately proceeding with ICASA has a minor complication because of a conflict of interest that could arise with my having accepted a directorship of an ISP

Does your ISP have better deals then Mweb? Care to share details?

I do all my downloading over short periods, usually 1 weekend - so I do 50 gigs on a weekend and my line goes to **** for hours. I get 50k/sec after that, should get 400 or so... Will be switching ISPs in a few months.

I was a MWEB customer, 4mbps prem account and I was very happy with it. Almost each month, I was doing about 400GB. Was throttled after that, but I knew why, so had no problem. Just can't afford anymore, so switched to an AH capped account. :/

I also get 50k/s sometimes but only during day time. So I think it might be more to to with conjestion. Good luck with the new ISP, hope you get something that suits you.

So my Premium Uncapped 1meg MWEB acc is actually a 100gig capped account?

Surely they should be advertising it as the latter?

+1

But the bigger question is, does anyone still use mweb?

I am on Afrihost 2mb business uncapped, man this account is the bomb.

Have you checked the control panel? http://myadsl.mweb.co.za

Interested to see if you're throttled after 50gb

Mweb isn't all bad - it's telling that you're on business uncapped on Afrihost - I also am - I had to upgrade from the normal Afrihost uncapped because it really is inferior to Mweb's offering. Although there is a little trick with Afrihost - if they start throttling you (and they do!), just turn your modem off for a minute or two, when it reconnects you'll get a new IP and be unthrottled until they catch on your connection is abusing the bandwidth... I don't have this problem with their business uncapped.

interesting.... MWeb told me the FUP on the 2Mbps standard uncapped is 40Gb.... not 70Gb as per the table
last month we had unusually high usage, and was at 40Gb that they sent me a message, and the speed went vrot.
usually we dont do more than 25-30Gb per mo
maybe they should do a rolling total over 2 or 3 months... coz some months you may do lot less, and in the month that you do go over they throttle u.

Mweb are one of the hardest ISPs to leave in terms of effort it takes. That alone is a reason to leave. Don't live with that anchor around your neck.

What's so difficult about sending an e-mail?

Agreed. It took me all of 3 minutes. I think I had to do it "the hard way" because it was in the name of my business - fill in a physical form, scan it and email it to them. While this is more difficult than clicking a "cancel" button, it's a lot less effort than going to the shop and buying a sausage roll for lunch.

I just copied this from my MWEB DSL console. I'm on 2Mb Standard:

You have used 56.56 GB so far this month.

Last Session: 22 May, 2014, 01:09:27

Connection status: Unthrottled

Your total usage for the past 30 days: 69.51 GB

Still streaming YouTube and downloading torrents, no probs :D

ah gees is this still happening... either stop downloading the internet or get a capped account

I am so glad I left Mweb, back with my pet hate company Telkom....so far pretty good less throttling than afrihost my last ISP and certainly better than mweb which I left because of throttling. Popular torrent downloading at the moment at 180kB/s 4MB adsl uncapped, not bad for 10am. Still think telkom is a crap company though.

15mins later Update now downloading at 40kB/s F@#$ you telkom

Has there actually ever been a ruling by ISPA against one of it's members? The number of complaints I lodged with ISPA (both in personal and company capacity) have always resulted in either "not having enough information" (despite adequate information being available) or trying to play ping-pong between complainant, ISP and ISPA.

It is quite shocking that none of the industry bodies such as ASA or ISPA have the willingness to actually monitor their industry. Why smack the hand that feeds you?

MWeb was wrong in crippling a previously advertised uncapped/unthrottled account and for example in my case raised "excessive usage" (which was 200GB/pm) already in January 2013 without ever wanting to provide an explanation.

I have now a better value-proposition with Afrihost Business Uncapped - and May is a slow month (school holidays last month went to 600GB):
Data Used: 288.11 GB
Average Daily Usage: 13.10 GB
Projected Monthly Usage: 405.97 GB
