MWEB unveils uncapped virtual hosting servers

Outbound traffic must be higher than inbound traffic in the same calendar month, nice way of saying no torrent downloads allowed.

Pity about the client that joins in the middle of the month, and has to transfer a lot of data to the server to get it operational.

Lol understandable :D What sort of applications would this have in real word non-business environments?

Good product, but have a lot of questions.

1. How does one install additional software ?
2. How do you control the licensing of software on the Virtual Server. I.e. Is it my responsibility to make sure my SQL license is in place ?
3. Does the virtual servers have fixed IP addresses to be pointed by port fowarding ?
4. Backups ?
5. Can I RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) the Virtual Server directly ?
etc, etc, etc...

But otherwise, it looks good !

PS. Your MWEB Business MyAccount portal needs some serious work.

Pricing seems pretty good, though I wouldn't really know. How does this compare to other ISPs - WebAfrica, Hetzner, Afrihost ?

This is frikkin awesome. We're hosting mission critical stuff on rackspace. I'd be very interested in moving the hosting locally, as our clients are all SA based so ping times would be greatly reduced.

I actually think they're saying please guys... if you're going to use it for torrents, seed the crap out of it and maintain a decent ratio. Sharing is caring.

@MWEB

"MWEB Business currently offers eight customisable Virtual Server Hosting packages with a choice of two operating systems: Ubuntu Linux and Microsoft 2008 Standard Server. The software is automatically loaded onto the server when the server is configured."

Will they be extending that to CENTOS? Would be nice!

If you run business services with them they usually don't have an issue providing trials for new services. Were I in the market to move my hosting I'd definitely give this a go but i'm quite happy where I am :)

If mweb wanted to demo this I wouldn't mind giving it a bash tho hehe

+1

CentOS is a must. What virtualization software is being used, and what kind of speeds can we expect?

I second the CentOS, would also be nice for them to offer CPanel license

Would also like a FreeBSD option

This looks quite tempting. R345 for 2GB ram, all be it on 1 vCPU.
Traffic is limited to 10Mbps inbound and 100Mbps outbound, which is okayish if most of your traffic is out.
Looks like the virtualization must be Vmware, or Virtualbox, or similar, judging from the quoted ability to add/change hardware, like cpu , disk space, make snapshots etc.

Would have to have a good look-see how this compares to Linode, AWS EC, Rackspace etc from a average cost position.

5-10 days turn around time from singing the documents before receiving your details... hmm bit long...
