I would like some clear answers here please, preferably from an MWEB Representative.

Are we allowed to use any kinds of SSL?

I have now received 2 warnings from MWEB. I have asked for more details, so I can avoid any problems, but I get very general replies.

What are the rules? which ports can I not use? what times of the day may I not download etc etc.
There are some reports of guys downloading 24/7 full speed and get no warning. Unlike me who download only at night, but I now have 2 warnings?

some examples of my questions and my replies

Hi

Which internet privacy protocols are not shaped? that way I could make sure to stay clear of them. I was not aware that certain protocols were unshaped and some were shaped.
I dont use tunneling or a VPN but my news server (newsdemon) uses SSL, which is Secure Sockets Layer and is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser.
Is it SSL overall that uses unshaped internet privacy protocols or just certain ports?

Please reply in earnest in order to rectify this problem.

Thanks
Kevin

Good day Kevin

Thank you for contacting us.

The SSL traffic mentioned is not shaped. Should you wish to continue with this pattern of usage, an Unshaped product would be more suited to your needs.

Should a similar pattern be detected, you are likely to receive a 2nd warning or Final, dependant on the severity thereof. Once a final notification is sent, your account is placed into the cancellation process.

Thank you.

Kind regards

Hmmm so according to that answer SSL traffic is not shaped but if they find some kind of similar pattern then you are likely to receive another warning. That makes no sense.

Today is my last day with Mweb. I tried them out for just this month (thanks Ly!) and I found the speeds to be not that bad. However some clarification on the rules would be awesome before I would ever think of joining them.

basically if you use SSL to bypass shaping on nntp or p2p you will get a warning.

Yea SSL is considered going around the shaping which makes sense cause nntp runs at next to nothing while ssl runs in the high 100-300 in the day :D.

This has been addressed several times in the uncapped feedback thread. SSL connections to some common news sites are shaped, but SSL generally is not shaped. Making use of an encrypted connection to regularly and repeatedly transfer GBs and GBs of data on a shaped account will be considered contravention of the AUP. The unshaped account is the right product for this type of usage. Using SSL in this manner is considered as bypassing the shaper.

if running full speed on nntp during day your bypassing it.

i use mweb server personally , runs at decent speeds, and its not bypassing shaping :P

the normal ssl ports is shaped, port 8080, 80 etc is not shaped with ssl , if use them your bypassing shaping, those ports you get from newsdeamon and usenetserver.com

I think the issue here is that there is almost zero clarity on the basic rules and there is no consistency (imo anyway)

It seems one cannot phone the elusive ABUSE department?

Anybody have a number for them? Got an e-mail stating that my account is 'scheduled for cancellation'. Just want to find out how long this process is.

i'm also patiently waiting for my warning letter since it seems that people with similar usage patterns to mine have received theirs. i connect to astraweb using ssl. the connection is shaped thus:

0kbps between 12pm and 6pm
400kbps between 6pm and 9pm
800kbps between 9pm and 11pm
1.6mbps between 11pm and 1am
3.3mbps between 1am and 7am
800kbps between 7am and 12pm

not that i download the whole day, mind you, as i have a scheduler that stops at 9am and resumes at 9pm, but apparently this doesn't matter :/ i've only averaged 160GB per month for the last 12 months.

upon receipt of the letter, i will assume mweb is challenging me to see just how much i can download before getting kicked off their network :D

You mean that your connection is shaped by MWEB? Why do you expect a warning notification then? If MWEB is shaping your connection then how are you bypassing shaping and thereby contravening the AUP? The times you show indicate that downloads run after 9am, although you said that the scheduler stops at 9am?

You mean that your connection is shaped by MWEB?
yes, my connection is shaped by mweb.

Why do you expect a warning notification then?
i expect a warning because others that use ssl have also been warned by mweb, even though they were also shaped by mweb.

If MWEB is shaping your connection then how are you bypassing shaping and thereby contravening the AUP?
that's precisely where the uncertainty lies. why have others received warning letters when they also say that their ssl connections to their nntp providers were shaped?

The times you show indicate that downloads run after 9am, although you said that the scheduler stops at 9am?
i schedule my downloads to stop at 9am just to be safe that i don't get labelled as a 24/7/365 downloader. by what i've seen though, it seems this was in vain.

Easy answer - you can run NNTP on port 119, 24x7x365.
Mweb will take care of the shaping so you cannot abuse them.

Yea but there is no point during the day :D. May as well not bother. SSL is so much better. Mweb though is limiting my traffic to around 1.8 meg so even on ssl i can only get about 120 during the day, i can do 180 but then i cannot browse :D.
