MWEB Usenet decommisioning

I made the move to CrystalWeb. Very happy so far. Support to get everything up and running was excellent. NNTP server runs well. I hear that CrystalWeb uses the NextGenNews server. Retention seems great.

Capped or uncapped?

Il definitely be jumping ship but where too.... been going through a few threads and from what i see there's issues all over. Everyone has something bad to say about an ISP.... what to do???

And 90% of the time it is because people have line problems which have nothing today with the ISP....

But it's making my choice so damn difficult. To be honest, ive never had any issues since I've been with mweb but i guess i was just one of those lucky ones. Just feel its timw for a change and considering their news servers are down, i refuse to pay for an extra service.

Same here

I know nothing of mweb or their news server but for SA ISP's? Guys it's a lesser evil situation. There is no holy grail ISP as if one did exist every single person in SA would be with them.

Currently I'm with Afrihost. They've been solid for the 3 years I've been with them however currently they're having a IPC crisis. We have been told that they have ordered new IPC and are awaiting Telkom to install it which should be done by mid November at latest and sometime this month by the soonest.

If things don't improve after the IPC upgrade from Afrihost my next option would be Crystal Web. From what I can tell (I have no direct experience) they're a new company, not even technically launched yet, that's trying to be as open with their clients as possible. Probably after seeing the success of Afrihost. Being new they have great customer support (that could fade as they get fatter) but it also means they're having teething problems right now.

That's about all the insight I can give. I haven't followed any other ISP's but I hope this helps in some little way.

Any IS based account that is resold by Openweb, Webafrica, Plugg, Vox uncapped accounts all have access to the IS news server which is news.is.co.za with 5 connections.

I'm not sure about retention and speed since its been ages since I used it.

Telkom and Telkom Mobile have access to news.saix.net with 2 connections. Retention is not bad but I don't know a exact figure. The saix news server allows 2 connections so speed wise it should not be a problem but from 10Mbps lines upwards I doubt you will be getting full speed. Just too little connections allowed.

Those are the main 2 news servers from big tier 1 ISP's so that would be you best bet. Paid usenet is unfortunately the only option if you want speed and retention. :)

So who is moving, and to which ISP you going to?

I am thinking of openweb.

Retention is set for 7 days, however, every time somebody access an article the timer is reset back to day 0 for it. As long as people are leeching an article it will remain on the cache.

The nntp server also allows 20 concurrent sessions per ip.

so does the vox Bolton have access to this news server?

I don't think VOX's bolt on uses IS. Only their uncapped accounts are IS.

If you want capped with night data why not try Web Africa?

It also gives you access to the IS news server.

Openweb is fine capped. Their uncapped is a bit shoddy. Unless you take business of course.

So i moved from Mweb. How many other people have done the same?

I canceled. I saw a bunch of people posting that they having problems with mweb news. A whole lot of people never got the email. I was one of them but saw these threads at least

I cancelled as well. Mine is going offline tomorrow.

Also got a call from a rep asking me why I am leaving. And trying to tell me I can get discount with another service provider.

So who did you guys move to? I had a 4 mb premium uncapped line. Where can I get the same service.
