MWEB Usenet decommisioning

news server has been particular crap the last few months so actually to happy to move onto something better

they could have at least made it the last day of the month and not some random day

That's true hey, MWEB demands one calendar month notice from its customers, so they should only decommission the server at the end of October.

Can we have a list of other ISP's with their own part-of-the-package news servers? Crystal Web is noted, but who else out there can I compare them with?

Me to. Also want to know. Need to cancel my subscribtion in the next few days to give a calendar month notice.

@MWEB Guy. Is this still happening ? See this news server are still up for now.

seems they have just decided to let the new server go completely crap before they close is it everything is out of server retention

MWeb was once a company at the forefront of innovation and offering value. Now, not so much anymore. I will pursue a course to move my personal, and all employee business accounts to another ISP.

Can't see a link, do share.

Your sarcasm detector is switched off.

Ok, let me run some highlights for you:

Threshold throttling.
Heavy shaping, even on "premium".
No more news server access (oh hey, it's this thread).
One of the most expensive.

Why people are still customers makes no sense to me.

I made the move to CrystalWeb. Very happy so far. Support to get everything up and running was excellent. NNTP server runs well. I hear that CrystalWeb uses the NextGenNews server. Retention seems great.

does CW have their own NNTP server?

Yes and no. They provide one as part of their deal, but AFAIK, they piggyback on the NextGenNews server. Currently 10 concurrent connections and runs full speed on my 2Mbps home line.

There's no piggybacking. We have a partnership agreement in place with the best news server in SA (and abroad in our opinion) - NextGenNews, in the same way Mweb had an agreement with Giganews. We choose to support local businesses instead, and may move our own caching server local soon too.

Sorry CW, it wasn't any attempt to put you down. I am really happy with my new service from you.

No problem at all, nugpot. And no offence was taken whatsoever.

Hey, who else pays for your usenet connection on a premium server? We're the only ISP in SA that does that, and we're proud of it. We're also proud of our partnership with NGN - they are without a doubt one of the top news server services in the world - there have been a few minor issues here and there with authentication which together, we're working to resolve, but this is top quality news server access for free.

We did this for the mybroadband community by the way. Most customers don't know how to setup a news server system - mybroadband users on the other hand are tech-savvy and expect a basic news server. We decided to take it one step further though, and while it may have incredibly limited rewards, its a service we're proud of and will continue to offer.
