MWEB Usenet decommisioning

What do you mean you got offered no discount? I was offered a discount of some sort but didn't bother reading it as I use Usenetbucket instead which as I recall is less than R100 a month unlimited.

I did buy a year in advance though.

*****

I see the discount is mentored in the first post. So I'm somewhat confused by that statement.

What do you mean you got offered no discount?

I was not offered a reduction in my MWEB subscription to make up for the loss of a service.

The discount on the Giganews package is laughable. After the 10% lifetime discount, it still works out to $26 (R300) per month.

Aah I'm with you now. Still paying the same for less.

Yeah, the discount is laughable.

That's just crap, i stayed with mweb through the whole thresholds throttling thing, but I'm not staying with them now, I actually use the newshost server.

Time to start shopping around for a new isp.

Crystal Web has a sick news server, you should probably check it out, speeds are pretty much maxed whenever I've used it

Thanks Woodlands. We just upgraded the news server this weekend, and it should be even faster as well. We're still giving away free premium news server access to new sign ups and we'll keep it that way.

It's disappointing to see other ISPs shy away from offering news server access at this point. We'd prefer that it be encouraged and managed correctly. So we've decided to offer our news server (2000+ days retention and VPN access) to non-customers as well at a discounted rate, so that even those stuck without access can remain connected with a proudly South African company, rather than having to send their business offshore.

It's tough to go into detail without this sounding like a complete marketing expedition, so rather just hop on to live chat with our staff on our site and talk to us about pricing for non-Crystal Web customers and we'll arrange accordingly.

On the plus side, this makes my decision to move to a different ISP easier. This and the fact that bottom end premium accounts don't deserve rate reductions when EVERY other product out there seems to be getting cheaper. Paying more for even less is not what I will be doing. DSTV subscription, you are next. Sorry, Naspers.

We haven't updated the site yet, so just talk to our support agents on live chat and they've been briefed on the offerings we have.

Essentially our business operates on an uncapped model, as does our news server. No block accounts yet, so pricing is dependant on line speed. As an example, 2Mbps premium news server access is R39 per month. I don't want to hijack this thread though, so I'm not going to say much else other than to talk to our live support staff. Available 24 hours per day Monday to Friday, and 10am to 5pm weekends and public holidays. ;)

I only wanted to clarify as we were mentioned by Woodlands who is a happy customer, and we're pretty active all hours of the day and night on mybroadband as management. :D

Talking about MWEB ands its customers .... I also note the MWEB shop in the Westville Pavillion has closed .... an uptake problem, what with AUP rules et al??

MWEB is the only ISP that publicly acknowledges that it does not want it's customers to use the Internet.

Meanwhile, on my ISP (link below!), they make sure that you know that it's a value add service. Up until today, I was not even aware MWEB was partnering with Giganews!

will be giving Crystal Web ;) a try.

Who runs FNB's network? used my free account with them the other day and youtube was so slow,

Ok well I will be moving all my services away from mweb. And they can forget about the vsat sites I wanted to send their way.cheers mweb, what a stupid move

Hi nugpot

Your feedback has been heard and noted.

Ok, cool, we have wasted out time reading your mail, and notice that you may become an ex customer. We really couldnt give a hoot, and are going to do what we want in any case, not pi$$ off and leave us alone to die slowly FFS .....

I know this from experience with the once fantastic, pre - Hershaw MWEB.

Oh okay so you want us to sign up for a service that offers a vpn, which the last time I forgot to disconnect from and downloaded during the day, I revived a call from Mweb asking me to refrain from using a vpn,I hope this minority is low enough that if many switch to torrents it does not increase shaping on your network.Im sure many will pay $26 for a service that is shaped heavily during the day and most parts of the evening.

Really becoming difficult for myself to justify staying a Mweb customer.

The mweb news server was atrocious anyway, nothing in HD was ever cached so downloads ran at 50kbps the whole time.

Also the first time I've heard about a partnership with Giganews and it certainly wasn't on the same level which makes me wonder if there was any real partnership at all.

Retention of 30 days is hardly Giganews standard.

Partnership?

I was under the impression that with usenet if you run a server everything gets propagated across all the servers anyway, ie: that's how the NNTP protocol works?
The only difference is that with a crappy server you will need to flush out content older than 30 days instead of >6 years.

4 slots and 30 day retention is pretty poor if you ask me.... That's like Burger King claiming a partnership with Coca-Cola, only to have Diet Coke in 4 locations served 30 days a year.

Mweb logic: Close down local news server. Recommend sending a big sum of money overseas to get same service additionally. Thus all these users use more international bandwidth, instead of at least some local commonly cached data by these users saving only using IPC data and no other bandwidth, leading to even more congestion and bad experience on a taxed network...

LoL let me get this straight, people had access to a ‘premium’ usenet server but M-Web never bothered to tell them about it and now M-Web is cancelling it because no-one is using it?

//we need a facepalm smiley
