MWEB vs Afrihost ADSL 1Mbps Uncapped

All ISPs shape the account no matter what you are on capped or uncapped in one way or another, no one can deny or argue about this.

Usually it's the torrent protocols that are the most shaped, but only during business hours and maybe add a hour or two. So in the long run this isn't a problem for anyone in my opinion.

If the ISP stats to shape you in real time services then you should be asking a LOT more questions.
The one thing that I have noticed is that Afrihost makes it a lot more clearer then Mweb that they do not shape game protocols.

I have just registered with Afrihost for their 10mb home uncapped package. I have been using a 4mb with telkom but its been too slow for me. I will update this thread in a few days with some feedback on the service. (If anyone is interested lol)

Stay away from MWEB, they are throttling the hell outta MWEB uncapped clients now.

This^^

AH are the better bet without a doubt.

I for one have put my money where my mouth is on this ....

Hershaw would dump in boxers if I did this at MWEB VV

From what I have read here. Afrihost still beating mweb? Used to be with mweb. Was nit happy with the new premium vs standard. So moved to afrihost haven't thought of going back. Been trying various options on afrihost. Currently on 50gb plus 50 gb free account. Only use about 70 to 100 gb a month un home uncapped so the capped account seems more cost effective. My 2cents.

Just go read the afrihost thread, the last page in the user uncapped.

They are shaping http and torrents for 18 hours a day now. Go read the last few pages before posting what you think they might be doing or how things might work. It will make you look less silly.

I have been following the thread for quite some time. Personally I haven't had issues with uncapped or capped. Might be because my usage is under 100 gb.

Personally I think you look like the silly one, If you read ANY ISPs usage policy they WILL and always do shape torrent protocols and some others as well. Being on a capped or uncapped package.

On uncapped most if not all ISPs will throttle you if you go over a certain amount of data usage why, easy the ISP will lose money.

Being on capped they will not throttle you at all, again easy, they want you to wast your cap as fast as possible so that you can buy more cap.....

But the shaping of protocols are the same for both at any given time.

Shaping does take place no doubt about it, but have a closer look at what protocols are shaped.

I'm on the 10mb uncapped account and have no problems with news server downloads, two pc's streaming Netflix and online gaming at the same time. Maybe I'm just lucky and not using any of the shaped protocols.

Go read the thread. They are shaping everyone on their home uncapped to 10% line speed every night midnight, regardless of how much you have downloaded. Its blanket, across the board including http and ftp downloads from any site (including legit ones like ios or windows updates).

I never had a problem with shaping, but only giving you ability to download 6 hours a night no matter what your usage is like is balls.

Again, go read the last three pages on their feedback and you will see AH is not to be recommended at the moment.

Like I said. I was on uncapped when they were shapping and had no issues. Still managed to download when I needed. Streaming and browing was perfect also.

@whatwhat

Do you even know what the difference is between Web browsing (HTTPS) and HTTP Downloads (downloading a file from your browser) ??

Once you work that out, then you will understand why I made my last 2 posts....

Please educate yourself, you are making youself look really stupid. Read from there onwards, you will see their AUP is no longer what their websites states.

I'm not going to bother responding to you anymore since it seems you might actually be trolling, no one could really be this thick.

@whatwhat, LOL
Still stand by my last couple of posts........

Oooh its got a bit nasty here hasn't it.

When I last looked about 6 months ago, everyone said that Afrihost were the best, and they've been pretty good. A bit of a billing problem - i.e. billing me for 10mpbs even though I couldn't get it. I haven't noticed too much shaping etc; but I think on an uncapped it's fair enough. I'm not too fussed if torrents take a little longer, and that's why shaping is much better than 'throttling' in my opinion. Can always VPN around lots of shaping too, if need be!

My only problems really have been with Telkom (line speed max 4mpbs :(, taking weeks to install [I hear that's amazingly quick, so don't worry I thanked my lucky stars])

Our Capped and Business Uncapped are not shaped - regardless of what you are doing. The Protocols you mentioned come into place when you are on normal Uncapped.
We have tried to make Capped as affordable as possible for clients. It's currently at about R2/GB and top ups are R5/GB.

Okay, that resolve one problem/question but the HTTP shaping that whatwhat mentioned ?
Regardless on what package you are on.

We don't shape by port or protocol. We use packet signatures to determine which service(s) are being used, such as gaming, streaming, P2P, etc. We then shape according to the appropriate policy.

In terms of HTTP, we do shape downloads, but not browsing. Generally HTTP is shaped to a far lesser extent than P2P, to provide the best overall experience, but because many users do try to disguise P2P and torrents especially over HTTP protocols, we have to shape to manage the network effectively.

Thank you for this information, so doing proving my point that I made a couple of post back about the HTTP and HTTPS.

This is also then in accordance to your current Acceptable use policy that states

Instant, Realtime traffic protocols such as: Web browsing (HTTPS); Live Streaming (YouTube); Secure browsing (HTTPS); VOIP; Email; Terminal services (SSH)
Non-Realtime Downloading protocols such as: HTTP Downloads (downloading a file from your browser), Torrents (BitTorrent), News servers (NNTP)

We will never throttle nor shape any of the Realtime services at any time of the day or night - no matter what your overall usage is.

Once again, thank you !

You should go post your thoughts in the Afrihost Uncapped thread then Havoc. There is a group of people just dying to listen to you.

You know what the funny thing is whatwhat, the fact that you still think HTTP and HTTPS is the same thing.
That is all i have to say to you.
