Hi All

I'm sure this must have been covered before. Forgive me for possibly reposting a question asked many times over.

MWEB or Afrihost? I'm pretty much set on of these 2 service providers.

I'm going 1Mbps ADSL Uncapped.

Benefits are that Afrihost's Netgear ADSL wifi modem for R600 has a USB Wifi dongle included whereas MWEB will give me a Netgear ADSL wifi modem for free but no USB Wifi dongle.

Modem aside (last of my worries), is reliability and service. My exchange supports 10Mbps but I'm going for 1Mbps as a start and may increase later on so my query is only relating to a 1Mbps line speed.

I see another benefit with MWEB's 1Mbps uncapped is the service is offered unthrottled. I assume both Afrihost and MWEB offerings are shaped with Afrihost being throttled as well.

I'm not a heavy downloader and won't need my downloads finished in record time but I also don't want to be limited by any cap.

Thank you in advance for any advise offered :)

Not sure about the 1Mbps products , but in my experience on the 4Mbps products the MWEB product outperformed the Afrihost product by a mile. I think the MWEB product is a bit more expensive but the performance benefit is worth the extra cash , in my opinion. MWEB support also great , I guess Afrihost support would probably be the same.

Thanks for opening this thread. It is an age old question, but hopefully you'll decide to go with us.

We NEVER throttle any of our DSL products. We only shape, and only when we need to. Other ISPs do throttle, and shape according to a schedule, so even if there is extra capacity, you can't use it. We shape the least amount of people to the least extent that we can at all times, so we give maximum benefit to you. When there is shaping, it only affects P2P and downloads. Gaming, streaming, VoIP and other real time services ALWAYS run at full speeds - guaranteed.

We also offer Turbocharge, which is unique to us. This allows you to remove shaping at any time, if you want to have full use of your connection at any time for an hour at a time. And we give you 5 free sessions every month!!

You can always sign up a FREE GB to give our network a test drive :) https://clientzone.afrihost.com/free-gb

Afrihost network has multiple undersea cables, where if you search the forums you will see when seacom broke mweb broke too.

I'm using the Afrihost 1mb uncapped. Had to downgrade from the 4mb - financial constraints :(
I'm happy with the service. Haven't had any issues, and torrents run at full speed most of the time, including during the working day. I'm sure the Mweb service is good as well, but I've always had a pain free experience with Afrihost.
my 2cents.

Correct we have cables running off the east and west coast, each running at almost our full network capacity so there is plenty of international redundancy. The added benefit is that if there are incidents like the ship dredging that damaged Seacom and EASSy, our other cables are on the other side of the continent and will never be affected.

I have been using mweb 1 meg uncapped for a few months now. it was fine for a while, however trying to stream from youtube is awful whenever a video starts it just drops fed, when I am looking at my network manager app. however when I am on 3g it just bolts and works like a dream. I am fed up. and now they have halved my download speed. I am tired of this. I am switching to afrihost next week. my colleagues have recently signed up with them and they are really happy so far. I dont want to be throttled anymore.

Stay away from MWEB, they are throttling the hell outta MWEB uncapped clients now.
All my friends are moaning about the same thing.
I don't mind them doing it say, during the day, but I just checked mine, It's 1am and my downloads are doing 3KB/s!
I don't care what your stories are, you've changed your AUP so many times, you've changed this T&C's 100 times, it's just not working out anymore, then I get this bloody e-mail (which I'm sure many have gotten) "We may have to slow down your Internet speeds" I mean.... GOD dude, I'm already only getting like 80KB/s on a good night time (say, 1am to 7pm) and now you wanna slow it down more to what? 0?

Ag, Piss off!

This is probably where they give you the best service you can get to 'Impress' you and then a few months later after you've signed up, they start changing the AUP's and T&C's to screw you.
No, honestly, if my line doesn't improve to some acceptable speeds (especially considering I'm a 1MB user) then I will just cancel. I'd honestly rather spend my money elsewhere, maybe even pay a bit more, but I'm sick of MWEB and their strond stories.

I remember that lovely "FREE THE WEB" tag line... "FREE THE WEB - and later, we'll slow it the hell down too"

Also got my Mweb letter!! Looks like they are throttling already although they say they are not. For a few weeks now Youtube streaming is extremely slow and jerky - almost impossible to watch!! The only way to watch is to download and watch later. Think ill give Afrihost a try.

signed up to afrihost last friday. couldn't be more happy. youtube and downloads working perfectly again. :) .
my one meg line is working like a 1 meg line! finally

Yeah and then you too can get the warning mail from MWEB about "Acceptable usage" which no one in their whole organisation can put into a numerical value, guess cause then they cant bulls#!t you around as they want.

Download speeds are a nightmare with mweb, your money will be better spent somewhere else. Service was good, not anymore. Im cancelling my 2mb uncapped account. I will give afrihost a try
