MXit parental control

Although I don’t think MXit is to blame for many of the problems which received press coverage lately, I commend them for trying to protect their users against some social ills. Poor MXit has up to now been blamed for everything from dysfunctional relationships to poor academic performance – I wish it was around in my time to have a good excuse for my parents/teachers if my marks were bad or I stayed out too late :D

Question 1: How is this Going to be enforced? Many kids have more than one mxit "Number"

Question 2: What about Things like 2go etc? They are not going to have that filter so children are going to go flocking to that program..

Unfortunately i blame MYBB for my bad performance in school... Not mxit...

Agreed, I like how even though it's not their fault for having uneducated/still being educated teens roaming their chat rooms they still try their best to sort out the matter

I commend MXit for trying to do something to quell the mob of morons going after their technology. This should shut them up for a while.

I wish people would parent their children properly and stop wanting outside society to raise their children for them. One child goes missing for a bit and there's a total uproar, but 80 000 people are murdered each year and it doesn't even make the news. Clearly there's more money in selling sensational stories than reporting the real problems facing us.

Who are you calling a moron? Clearly you're totally clueless and need to obtain an education in psychology or medicine before shooting off your mouth about issues you don't understand. To summarise, not all children have parents capable enough to teach them the correct things, not all children have parents and even when taught not all children register neither do the
children who register keep the advice for life as their lives change so they
become more vulnerable. Next time please do some research on the topic
before shouting obvious solutions everyone knows about. Think deeper,
not everything is black and white, especially not in social and psychological
issues. I'm sick of repeating myself. Read next time, pls.

This is just a typical case of shirking blame.

"Why should I admit that I am a crappy parent and then have to put more effort into raising My Little Johnny when it is just far easier to blame Mxit for the fact that he is a little Sh1te"

Who are you calling a moron?...

Don't spread to here,we've discussed the topic indepth and the cases he's speaking of are the sensationalized stories where the kids _do_ have parents that decide to take the trite direction of blaming MXit. Nobody is saying your point of some kids not having support structures in place is invalid, they are saying that these kids who still decide to go rogue are stupid, and their parents blaming everything but themselves moronic.

Rather applaud MXit for attempting to implement controls which quite possibly could just drive their own business away instead of attacking opinions without thorough discussion

Enough.

That second part is soo true...

And i forgot to say i think MXIT is an amazing company for doing what they do, and i still think they will come very far with what they have and what is still to come...

But most kids run away i think because noone cares enough or don't show that they care...

I too commend Mxit for implementing said features despite the fact that the parents who often blame Mxit for unfortunate happenings are just as much to blame for not controlling their children.

Kids will always find a way to still use the service...
So between negligent parents and rebellious teens... its a waste effort imo.
But Kudos to Mxit for for showing some effort.

I've mentioned it in the other thread, but remember there already is parental control available for all chat services, including MXiT, if you use the Vodacom ACM (Adult Content Management) service.

This has been available for a long time and I won't mention who has been one of the strongest critics of this system that allows parents to block their kid from using MXiT. ;)

Does it also block The Grid?

Does it also block The Grid?

No, of course not. We only block competitor services. :D

Actually, it should. I've not tested it myself, but there is no discrimination in the system and chat is deemed adult.

Just to re-iterate, a company somewhere monitors and builds ACM lists and ACM users (like Vodacom) subscribe to these lists. A bit like a blacklisting service.

So a system that new or below the horison might not make it onto the lists immediately, but I'm pretty sure the Grid will be there by now.

On the other hand, I believe it's Mxit's responsibility to protect children from undesireable characters while they use the system that makes money for Mxit... I think it's wrong to simply say it's up to the kids to protect themselves from perverts. A simple way to do this would be to force people to identify themselves positively using an ID document when registering, and having physical address on file as in the case of any contract. Kids can only sign up under their parents and with their consent, and complaints are easier to follow up.

Someone bragged to me recently that they made over R1000 in airtime in one night alont using a prepaid sim and approaching guys they knew anonymously pretending to be a young girl willing to trade pictures for airtime. (I think it's called me2u or something). The fact that this is so easily done is proof that this is one of the primary uses of Mxit among males.

We will evaluate the uptake of this feature during the school holidays and monitor the general behaviour of our users before we make a final decision on whether to implement it permanently for our RSA and international user bases, and in what form.”
I also think it's important that everyone be reminded that they should not feel that the online world is 'private'... people are watching, like it or not... and you never know if you're talking to a friend or not.

bad idea to do this right after that girl got abducted though. No matter how they try and swing it now it is going to look to all like they are taking responsibility for what happened when it was clearly the parents responsibility to monitor their daughter. Its a great plan, but the timing sucks.
