Hi there
I was hoping you guys could help me with a query regarding line attenuation and SNR levels.
I have a Netgear DGN-2000 router and up until last week has a 384 connection. During this time my levels were 38db attenuation and 29db SNR, which seemed consistent with my distance from the exchange (around 2.5km).
Last week we managed to get Telkom to upgrade the line to 4096, at which time my SNR decreased to around 12db. My upload speed was also only connecting at 416. So after some fiddling with the connection inside the house (disconnecting an unused line, cleaning the wires and reconnecting) and having the Telkom techie out on Saturday, we managed to decrease attenuation to 34db and increase SNR to around 16.2db average.
My upload was now connecting at 512, browsing speeds were finally consistent and up to 4096 standards, and all ADSL line estimators put my max speed at 8mbps/18mbps for ADSL/ADSL2+ respectively, which I was very happy with.
However, upon checking the stats again this morning I noticed attenuation had increased to 40db and SNR had fallen to 14.3db. Now since I'm pretty sure I haven't moved further from the exchange, I'd like to ask your opinions on what could have caused this decrease? I've also noticed download speeds have decreased since getting this reading.
Do you think it's something on Telkom's side, or is it more likely I have a loose connection somewhere? Or maybe both?
Justin
