My Blackberry Z10 experience and problems

Got mine yesterday, its going to be tough to learn all the new features. Had my old sim card "snipped" to fit in the new phone. Waiting for sim swop to come trough then ill put the new micro sim card in. I upgraded from a blackberry and the bbm was working on it. Now in the new phone BBM does not want to work keeps on giving me a ( NO blackberry data. BBM is unable to connect to the server Please try again later ) anyone have an idea as to why this is happening. I am connected via wifi and my rim user and password have been entered in correctly.

Edit: It was the sim card after the sim swop all is working :) Just waiting for whatsapp to become available for download so I can chat to non BBM friends

Fitted a CellC sim on the weekend and am prepaid to test Z10 + CellC. Just activating the sim until all services were running was a major pain and took the most of Saturday. Data only started properly working sometime on Sunday.

The two issues (I am not sure if it is CellC or the Z10) are:
- I get weird "Broadcast" messages which seems to contain the current location. Never seen this on a phone before and no clue how to turn it off. The phone had so many pop-ups queued up, I had to reboot the phone.
- The Z10 seems to struggle to switch between Wifi and 3G. Flicking Wifi off (and having full signal on 3G) did not give me any data. I had to reboot the phone.

I have had no problems with this on Vodacom. As soon as I arrive home, the Z10 will switch to Wifi data and similarly will jump back to 3G when I leave my wifi area.
 
Anyone know about these "Broadcast" messages. Really need to take a screenshot the next time it happens. It does occur on both CellC and Vodacom (both pre-paid). I am unsure if this is a Z10/BB10 problem or a Vodacom one (I am ruling CellC out, since it also occurs on VC prepaid). It does look like SIM events and not SMS though.

I believe OpenWhatsapp is out.
 
Just an update regarding the BB10 10.0.10 update - most carriers will only make this available in a few days or even weeks. Reminds me of those horrible Nokia days, where one had to get a service firmware and then use Nokia diagnostic software to upgrade since none of the local carriers would offer it.

In any case, the 10.0.10 update is supposed to address Gmail issues as well as improve battery usage. Although the firmware is available, the OTA update will only be pushed once the carriers allow it. An alternative to force an update is to use BlackBerry link (make sure that you backed up the device) and then use the option "Reload the device". Make sure your phone is unlocked and be prepared for about 1-2 hours of downtime on your phone as the phone is reset and the latest firmware for your device is downloaded.

Weird, my update on Vodacom came through last night? I was connected to my home Wifi though.

I didn't need any cables and the update happened in place with no need to restore data. The phone restarted and I'm on Software Release 10.0.10.82, OS version 10.0.10.648 now.

Interesting - kudos to Vodacom. Nothing on CellC yet. Also tried MTN sim this morning and also no update.

Damn - their "tweaks" for hub have now destroyed my iCould account setup. Everything else works though...
 
I just did a SIM swap at my local MTN. infront of my queue was a lady who had her Z10 for over 7 days (9 days to be exact) and MTN would not allow her to exchange it for a new one, their return and replace policy is 7 days IIRC, it almost looked like the screen was cracked from underneath the capacitive screen ontop. Needless to say I was not impressed with both MTN and the Z10

I am on 10.0.9.348 , cell c

I tried the reload software option on bb link but it said "there are no blackberry device software updates available"

Any idea if I can Download the update file itself directly or any other way or something ?

Really need this update to sort out the battery issues. Phone doesn't last me 12 hours after a full charge

Best option is to ask someone on Vodacom to give you the micro SIM for a short period of time. Or alternatively you can just pop in a pre-paid microsim - you don't even have to activate it. CellC will apparently only come out with it in 2 weeks time. I have tried everything myself to force it but no chance.

Once you have done the update with VC and then pop in the CellC SIM you will get another 1MB carrier update. Just be aware, that BB Link will prompt you to do another update - make sure you check the version, as in my case it wanted to downgrade back to 10.0.10.
