My Blackberry Z10 experience and problems

I think you just got a phone out of a bad batch. Happens with all manufacturers. The iPhone 5 had its bad batches. Just take it back and book it in as an OBF and get a replacement. A friend of mines company has been developing apps for BB 10 for about a year now and he promises great things to come for BB. So hang in there! Don't feel negative about it! I myself played around with the phone and agree that the OS is not too shabby, its new and refreshing. Anyway! Good Luck! I hope the replacement doesn't bomb out like the last one LOL

Best option is to ask someone on Vodacom to give you the micro SIM for a short period of time. Or alternatively you can just pop in a pre-paid microsim - you don't even have to activate it. CellC will apparently only come out with it in 2 weeks time. I have tried everything myself to force it but no chance.

Once you have done the update with VC and then pop in the CellC SIM you will get another 1MB carrier update. Just be aware, that BB Link will prompt you to do another update - make sure you check the version, as in my case it wanted to downgrade back to 10.0.10.

Ok cool, I took an old inactive Vodacom sim an cut it to micro size and it's updating now via wifi.

If do a restore of my back up on bb link, will it affect my software version?

Another q, anybody notice any major improvement in battery life with the new os upgrade?

If so please post your before and after battery life. Thanks

Need to have it run for some more time, but it did appear that I had more juice left yesterday - my usage was higher yesterday as well - i.e. plenty of phonecalls, and wifi/3g is on all the time. With the same usage behaviour I get to about 20% left on the iPhone by 6pm with the Z10 I was still sitting way over 50% at 8pm last night.

No, the initial version was some 10.0.9.xxx. When I did the update with a Vodacom sim I moved to 10.0.10.348 (this was a 150MB update) and when I then popped the CellC sim in, I moved to 10.0.10.648.

My details:
Model: STL100-1
OS Version: 10.0.10.648
WLAN: 1.1
Radio: 10.0.10.649

Battery is currently sitting at 60% - and this is after having it taken off charge yesterday morning - so really great after 24 hours of usage. iPhone lasts me around 12 hours on a good day (or 8 on a very busy day). I doubt I could run the Z10 battery flat on a heavy day. I have unfortunately no real comparison stats from before the update.

i read discharge / recharge cycle for a period of 3 to 5 times helps whens battery is new.

i have:
Model :STL100-1
Software Release: 10.0.9.348

That battery life is quite impressive, overly so.

What is your usage like?

I have Wifi, 3G and NFC on. I have not changed any of the default settings. While in the office and at home I am on Wifi with 4 email accounts (2 push and 2 pull) and then also FB, Twitter, LinkedIn.

Yesterday's usage was reading through some CrackBerry forum posts, about 10 SMS, FB, LinkedIn, Twitter. Went through email, check calendar, looked at a few Harlem Shake videos (don't ask) and spent 57 minutes on calls.

Yes I did and so did my SO. We are using Vodacom, software release 10.0.10.82, OS version 10.0.10.648.

He is a power user and constantly talking on his phone, lots of e-mails and messaging. He is always using 3G, no wifi available. With the previous OS, his phone would be dead at 16:00 after removing if from the charger at around 7:00. Now, he makes it home around 19:00 and around 20% charge remaining.

I don't make a lot of calls, but I receive a lot of emails and BBMs. I use wifi when at home. Previously, I would charge every evening, now the battery lasts for a day and a half.

I saw something recomended on crackberry a while back... I have been doing this for a while and its really helped.

You need to completely drain your battery every once in a while, like let it run till it turns off, then boot it up till it turns off again, do this till it will no longer boot.
Do a battery pull and recharge it for a full cycle.

This really does help. I was getting two full days usage from my phone.

It's my understanding that with newer batteries the deep-charging/reconditioning causes more issues. I am no expert, but what I understand that newer battery types don't suffer from that "charge memory" issue, where you had to drain a battery completely in order for it to fully charge/hold it's load. It seems that with current batteries, a deep charge starts some cristallisation process where charges are not properly held.

I would expect a new Z10 last longer batterywise than a 2 year old iPhone 4 (having said that, I was never able to get more than max 14 hours out of an iPhone - I believe the iPhone 5 is worse).

Anyone know about these "Broadcast" messages. Really need to take a screenshot the next time it happens. It does occur on both CellC and Vodacom (both pre-paid). I am unsure if this is a Z10/BB10 problem or a Vodacom one (I am ruling CellC out, since it also occurs on VC prepaid). It does look like SIM events and not SMS though.

I would guess they are "Cell Broadcast" messages - usually the Cell Tower name or ID. Check if the messaging or network setup menus refer to Cell Broadcast or Cell Info and switch it off from there

Just an update : the new os upgrade os awesome.

Previously I was getting 12 hours usage for around 3 consecutive days.

I updated to 10.0.10.82 last night and now it's about 40 % left after 12 hours usage , when normally it would be dead by now.

Has anyone been able to figure out if BB10 has a similar option as iOS tagging a contact record as "me" - in my case I have my details in the address book (coming from OS X) and now with BB10 I also have a BBM identity and I am wondering if you can link the two?

HI anyone know when MTN will have this update available? Still sitting on ver 10.0.9.2372 when I do a check for update I still get the "You have the latest software"

Correct, although it also depends on the batteries in use and the tech its based on. Laptops that have removable batteries shipping at 30-50% charge require you to exhaust it and recharge it fully, topping it back up five times from around 50% usage before the software has an accurate benchmark to read from. Cellphones don't require this, especially with the ones that have non-removable batteries, but I had to do it for my LG C660.

If you happen to get those "Mobile / Cell broad cast messages" - this setting can be turned off in the Hub. Open a SMS from the Hub then click Settings and you will see "Mobile Broadcast" as an option - there you can disable it.
