My dad and I make and sell our own boerewors (as well as chicken sausage). He won the regional's for the Shoprite Boerewors competition a few years back, and his stuff is top notch/quality. Much better than the crap you'll buy at your local Spar or Pick 'n Pay.

I was wondering if anyone would know how we can get a foothold in supplying businesses that sell to the consumer? Obviously the big boys have their contracts (and rigged competitions), but was wondering if there's a local farmer's market somewhere that one can do this in which gets more exposure somehow and in turn, more orders?

Friends of friends and family loves this, but obviously buy's too little at a time to make it viable for now. I want to take it to the next level and churn out a few hundred kg's of these tasty mother****ers.

Any ideas or advice would be welcome
 
Checkers currently have an add where they claim that they are prepared to sell products from local people. Maybe go and see the manager at your local Checkers? I cannot find anything on their website.
 
I know every second weekend there is a farmers market just outside of Durbanville on the Vissershok rd, on one of the wine farms.
Also perhaps try and sell to smaller butcheries or shops.

Maybe even try selling it to a couple of places like restaurants / Pubs.

If you can produce a bit maybe go have a chat with the local PnP / Shoprite / Checkers / Etc. owner.

Alternatively you can also try the Old Biscuit Mill and rent out a space on a Saturday in the food court and see how that goes.

There are tonnes of markets in CT:

Friday night in Muizenburg, Biscuit mill, 2 in Tokai, City bowl market and numerous others in the North.

I suggest you set up a braai stand that sells wors rolls and raw packaged wors as well. So you can catch both types of customers.

I'll be looking for your stand...
 
I know my dad took quite a long time to start selling to Pick n pay and the like.

You need to go speak to them, find out what meat supplier requirements are and all that.

xrapidx, I used to be based in JHB (worked there for several years) and moved back to Cape Town in 2007/8

We built our own boerewors van my dad is using to try and sell boeries and hamburgers. He was focused on festivals or expo's but I don't think he considered farmer's markets at all (I got the idea from watching too much American TV, lol)

If our local Checkers will sell these it'd be awesome. He has 2 places he supplies, but they aren't selling very well as I'm convinced that people don't really buy their boerewors at these places regularly.
 
I guess a butcher would make his own, but its still worthwhile trying to strike a deal with one.
 
Our local Spar sells Boerewors from some local guy, cant be found in other Spar's.

This is East London though........Spar's seem to have a more personal experience regarding ownership etc.

What do you charge per kg?
Does this wors shrink when you braai it?

I got some lekka wors a while back for R55/kg and this stuff did not shrink much when braaied.
 
Doesn't shrink no and I think my dad mentioned he sells for R53/kg. It depends on the quality of meat he gets and if he mixes in a little pork or not. The last batch he made is perfect and contains no pork or added stuff that is supposed to weigh it in a bit, but cost him quite a bit extra.

He tries to compete with what is out there price-wise, but I've told him numerous times, with a quality boerie he doesn't really have to worry about the price, even if it's a bit more expensive, people will buy it because they know the quality would be the best

Agreed, the stuff you get in supermarkets is not that great. The wors I got from Grobbies butchery on the Bluff is really great stuff even though probably slightly more expensive than other places.
 
I still want to find a nice butcher in my area for meat... (Blouberg, if anyone knows one).

When you sell at these markets you want to make it look like you have something special, organic, home made, fair trade, grass fed... hipsters don't care about price, they want to see something that is not available at PicknPay
 
Its a bit late, but the Edgemead Market starts tomorrow. You also might consider the Tokai food market near the forest at the top of Tokai Road (Saturdays). There has been a guy selling boerewors there, but he hasn't been for the last few times I have been there. It also attracts an up-market clientele from Tokai and Constantia. The baboons can be a problem though, my friend who sells greens there has to keep a lot of stuff in her car as they just roar in
