My dad doesnt like the website i built him

Woah dude, why so many css/js includes for such a simple site.

See you're using bootstrap. Probably would've looked better with the default bootstrap theme, soz:(

Don't be too hard on the guy. Getting the combination of fonts, spacing, colours, photos,css, layout is really hard especially if you start from scratch.

If you guys are so good rather post your websites you designed to inspire the OP.
 
besides the logo that does not fit the theme and the bog splash photo that's out of focus, its okay

He asked our opinion and we gave it, he argued our opinions and we reiterated our points.
No one is being harsh, we're being honest.

I don't think he came here expecting his ego to be stroked.
 
I would be interested to know the OP's age etc.. are you in IT have you done sites before what kind of experience do you have with graphic tools ... would help guys give you relevant info.

I agree he is making a lot of basic mistakes. He should either realize it is a learning journey that will take time and reading a lot of tutorials on the net.

However his father's probably got him under a deadline. I would use one of those wordpress builder templates and not mess with the generic fullscreen photos as when you get it wrong you get is horribly wrong. Using a more than 1MB file for a background image. Not good at all.

I got to know the common templates being used and one thing that strikes me is the amount of designers who call themselves that but still use templates and take credit for it as their own work. That's why top web designers who work for advertising firms get paid big bucks. If they use template, they will get caught out. That is unless you're in government.

That reminds me. What ever happened to that Wordpress 100 million rand website investigation.

f22raptor - You don't have design skills.
Accept it, move on.

If you're feeling hurt, it's only your ego that's bruised, ignore it and move on.

If you want to get better at design then read through the replies in this thread. Make a list of items mentioned (like nfbs' reply quoted above)
Go read up a little about each of the points you've written down. Check what other sites are using for each of the points.
See if they're using all caps in their menu items and then in their headers. Check if their menu is a sans-serif font and then is their body copy serif, or do they only keep serif for quoted items.
If 'sans-serif and serif' don't mean anything to you then go google them.
Google what a good font stack is, use it.
Go check out how to use colours, https://color.adobe.com/ , understand the different 'rules' - complementary, triad, shades, etc..

Check your line-height, check your paragraph spacing. Check your font sizes.
All these things come naturally to a good designer.

Can you really read the text on the home page without squinting?
Do you want your fathers customers to have to squint to read the text or should they be able to do it easily, without strain?

Do you need to repeat the page the person is on even though it is highlighted in the menu?

What do shoes (on the about page) have to do with your fathers business or is it quirky as it goes with the strapline underneath the shoes?

Try something with the strapline, use a thinner font, increase the size, make it italic, play around..
Get some spacing between your paragraphs, make things EASY for the user. It's hard reading what is there.

Add some more colour, maybe the line introducing the bullet points can be in black or something.



Or .. there's the other way:

Get a designer involved. You worry about doing the coding and doing what you want to do and they do what they are best at.
Ask a friend that has design ability and knows more about all the things mentioned above.
You go learn some wordpress, read the codex and figure out how you are going to implement the changes the designer may come back with.


Also if you're not selling anything then you can remove the woocommerce plugin.
