My dad doesnt like the website i built him

I designed some pretty ugly websites when I first started out.. at the time 'bevel and emboss' was all the rage .. lol .. I cringe when I think about them now.

  • The About page doesn't even have a nav bar, has a stolen stock image at the bottom and the image is in line with the end of the text o.0
  • There are clashing colours all over the place, you can't just take two colours you like and think they'll work well together.
  • The Welcome page (which isn't the homepage?) is full of links that open in a new tab.
  • The image on the homepage is terrible, with or without the text.
  • The text over the image on the homepage is unreadable.
  • The text all over the site is full of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • The list of clients on the Welcome page doesn't align properly to a grid.
The fact that you think it's fine is worrying, I don't think this is something you can tackle on your own. This is where you should pay someone to build the site for you.

I've worked on some butt ugly websites that where very good at converting customers. What I see that is missing is a call to action on each page. A simple contact us form on each page usually the right col.

Get a free Mouseflow account to see how people navigate the site as well. Has helped me streamline a site.

Hi

How does it look now www.mgtassist.co.za ?

NB-I have no control over the number of words per page
Just as bad. Certain colours only fit together. Turquoise it not a colour you should be using for text

90% of people when asked to draw a self portrait, will draw something that looks like a child's drawing. Same with web design. Rather use a template with an existing colour scheme and fonts and just put the content and photos in.

If you site doesn't have a lot of content like your looks to be, I suggest using a one-page template.

See example of a free one you can use:

I'm with the other guys on this one. Your best bet would be to make use of a template. I make use of templates, there's no shame in that. I'm a programmer, not a designer. There are some exceptional free or cheap templates out there.

That is damn ugly, your dad should hire a professional.

logo is pretty bad too. Why the white border? Don't do that. :erm:

why dont you just do it with joomla or something, or download a HTML template , there are also various bootsrtap templates you can download for free. Web designing is clearly not your thing.

The floating logo and lumo turquoise dont look good at all. If the header bar was white with grey text it would look better. That wall of text needs to be reigned in - with a maximised window it doesn't look great.

That website make my eyes bleed...

Font is wrong (and too big), colours are shocking and the logo looks like it was tacked on as an after-thought.

Looks like you are using wordpress - go find some decent templates and try those out.

just getting rid of that terrible font, and making the text black makes it look much "better"

Read my previous post and get a designer.

failing that:

Do yourself a favour and change your font to OpenSans.
Possibly use Roboto for the headings.

Keep your content to 960px wide max ... wider than that and it get's very tiring to read.
Change the font colour from turquoise to just about anything else.
Drop the font size by about 4px to 10px.
The contrast of the white on turquoise in the header is hard to read.

Go check amazon - what colour are they using for their text? black? no... they're using rgb(51, 51, 51), use that.
What do they have in their menu, white? no .. rgb(204, 204, 204) - possibly use white as a hover over/active state indicator.
Make the logo transparent and put it on a darker background.
Loose the white block crap.

Give some more replies to this thread so we know what you have an have not tried or read.
If you don't give people feedback then they're going to stop commenting.

That web design is offensively bad. You aren't ready to be a professional web designer and IMO, you don't really have the innate talent for it either. Hand the job to someone else and continue with your studies. This exercise is just going to waste your father's time. Sorry, that sounds incredibly harsh but it's the simple truth.

Learn some semantics.
Don't have a paragraphs of text seperated by <br>'s, put the paragraphs in <p> tags.
Don't 'recreate' a list using <br>'s, use <ul> and <li>

90000 times better.

If you suck with colours, don't use them. Or copy a popular site's colours.
Black and white is your safe zone. You can then choose a hyperlink and rollover colour from the Logo (not too light or you won't see it)

And your old man is 100% right.

But if you want FREE this is how it goes.

Any Wordpress offering would look better than that.
