Could it be lightning that caused both my on board and PCI ethernet adapters to stop working? One port on the router also stopped working after there was a thunderstorm in my area.

most probably. I have been through plenty of routers and both my desktop pc's have pci network cards because the onboards have been blown.

Its probably via the phone line. I'm assuming that your router is an adsl router.

I don't know why it only blows some ports and not others. Most direct earth maybe?

The same happend to my Iburst Desktop modem and and also a 8 port network switch.

It happend when my Iburst modem was connected with the external antenna and I was at work when it happend.

I lost only the network port on the Iburst modem and 2 ports on the 8 port switch and my network port on my pc still works fine without problems

Ok. Thanks for the info guys. What must one do during thunderstorm to try to avoid such incidents then? Will disconnecting the phone line help?

It's not exclusively hit through the phone line, I suggest you run all your equipment through a UPS and/or use surge protectors.
