In light of the recently passed tired of searching on behalf of others thread, allow me to introduce you to my single most loved support question:

Hi

I cannot register on www.(deleted).net
Please help

I get this quite often. The website in question has a button labelled "Register". Its landing page asks users to log in or register (with another courtesy link). Yet somehow, I must guess why the person cannot register. Reasons so far:
"My mouse is wireless and the battery is flat and I cannot click the register link."
Ok, I made that one up, cos it is the only one that would not provide some sort of problem with clicking the link. Real ones are far dumber, including forgetting registration details and not seeing the reminder link. Clicking the reminder link and not remembering their email addresses or cellphone numbers...

Well, I've had more than 10 people phone me about this:

"I can't login to your website"

After checking their login details and going through the steps with them on writing their password (case sensitive) and what their username is, I eventually figure out they can't view *any* website *at all*

Because....

wait for it...

Waaaaaaiiit....

They couldn't remember their Dialup Account username and password and somehow associated visiting my website and not being able to login with the fact that they can't dialup, however, they're too stupid to realize that they dialup first (which is probably setup for them and on automatic) and that somehow their account details went awry and now blames the website...

And I'm not ****ing with you, MORE THAN 10 people. This is in a course of a few months of course but this must be the dumbest ****ing thing ever. Now whenever someone says they can't login or see my website, I always ask them if they can google first.

So what's the url of this dialup-credential-breaking website acid? :)

Actually, back in the 90s that was a real hack until modem suppliers upped their firmware. It was a favourite of mine and on several forums circa 1995 my signature read:

ath

and it worked!

I eventually discovered why my newest "user" could not register. S/He sent me screen snapshots of them filling in everything on the register form except the password field and then a screenshot of the error page
"You have not supplied a password"

I replied:
"You cannot register. You have not supplied a password." I then left work.
