My first car.

Really? My dad really wants me to buy a 1996-1997 Golf Chico 1.3l.

That won't be cheap on petrol? I have a 170cc Scooter so I can use that when the sun is shining, I guess I can use the car mostly for transporting other people/stuff.

What you think? I really like this shape golf

(just as an example)

but my dad says its a different engine and doesn't recommend it.

Thing is my father owned Ford and VW all his life, had a 1.8l GTI Jumbo Golf and a 1.6l 1988 one. He also has a 1980 Ford Cortina atm.

Maybe a Tazz or Corolla will persuade him that Toyota is awesome as well?

That golf is not a good buy IMO... too much km's and crappy wheels, I have a Golf 3 GTI full house exec, original mags, with less K's and selling it for R 42K soon since I'm leaving for Europe. My consumption is about the same as that golf... it's not very economical at 8.3l/100km.

But the golf 3 still looks good on the road today which is why I bought one.

Also drove a Golf 3 GTI... Loved that car.
I don't mind a car with a carb, but I'd replace the standard carb with a 36 weber, but that would cost a bunch of extra money. A Golf 3 with fuel injection would be better though.

If you do go for that, just make sure you get a model after 1996. The Golf 3s with fuel injection from 1996 and earlier came with a crappy fuel injection system... the same system that they've used in the GTIs since the 80s and I did about 300-400km on a tank (55L tank I think). I eventually replaced my fuel injection computer with an after-market one and that had huge impact.
The CLIs/GTIs after 1996 had the new fuel injection system... afaik the same one that came in the Golf 4 / Polos. They were much better.

Tazz / Midge (323) / Accent
At that price you want something Japanese (or Korean) because its pretty much built to last.

Never buy VW no matter what the budget. Also on that budget avoid Opel and other German cars.

My first car was a Civic EK3, I'm still driving it. If you can get a good one on your budget I think it's a great buy...

I drove an 80's honda daily about 8 years ago, reliable and fuel efficient cars... those KM's are rather much.

How much is too much? Will the engine die?How much will that cost? What difference is there in engine between 100k and 200k?

I know 200k is a lot of driving hell even 5k is a lot - took me 15 months to put that much on my car so 200k could be like 600 months before I hit 200k. (50 years)

Personally I would not trust an engine over 300K unless it has been overhauled with a guarantee.

You need to check what items should have been replaced at what intervals. Remember, cars and engines are very complex and made up of many components. For example you could have two cars, one with 160,000km on the clock and the other with 225,000km on the clock. Both should have had their cambelts replaced every 75,000km but the lower mileage one skipped the 150,000km replacement where as the high mileage one just had its cambelt replaced. Needless to say if the belt goes on the low mileage one you are going to be in a lot of pain. But that's just one example.

Other things also play a big role like if the car was properly maintained. Yours truly used water (no antifreeze) in his Astra from 175,000km and the head gasket was trashed when it reached 200,000km. Had to spend R10k to replace it along with all other major service items like waterpump and cambelt. So in theory it should reach 250,000km with only minor service requirements.

take mar car as an example, it is at 236000 KM, previous owners maintained it well enough, I've spent over 15k in 2 years on maintenace only and the engine has many more K's to go... but if it get's to 300K I'd send it for a proffesional engine inspection and replace what needs to be replaced.

Now we need to discuss safety.

Assuming my car comes barebones, how would I protect it?

What would be affordable and effective?

My car will be parked in a locked garage at night, and be in a busy parking lot during the day, but at around 7 o clock the parking lot will be quite empty - which is when my shift ends. I am parked within range of hearing my alarm.

It's pay day tomorrow. Looking at a Fiat Palio 2001 model with 170k kms on it, the owner is a friend of my grandma's. She has a back problem and can't drive anymore. The car is being serviced atm for a oil leak.

She wants R30k for it, I might be able to negotiate a bit though.

Also my moms work colleague is a panel beater - he owns a mk1 Golf that he wants to sell because he now has 3 cars and one has to go. He wants R23k for it.

I know these two cars are well maintained, I will inspect them personally, but I really want a Honda/Toyota if they are as good as you guys say they are.

After spending R1400 on my scooter over the last 60 days just for two CVT belts; rollers and a service I want something that only needs to be serviced every 10k kms and that I can do myself easily.

ffs still fuming over that R1k

LOL... if you think 1K for a scooter service is bad get used to 3 times that amount when getting billed for your car. I average around 2K for simple things.

Yeah but I bet you don't have to service your car every 2000k kms. Don't cars go like 10k kms just for simple things? That's half a year for me. 3k/6 = R500 pm vs R1000 pm that I pay atm.
