I wrote this as a reply to another thread but probably better not to hijack that thread and rather start my own.

I'm getting an iphone 4 from a friend who is coming from the UK soon. Just a few questions.

* I wasn't aware about the micro-sim situation. Can I just go buy a new micro-sim and keep my old number.

* I am on pay-as-you-go atm, how do I get data bundles onto the phone for using the net etc.

* Are there any free gps navigation apps. I see there is a Garmin ap or something similar for like $60 which is quite steep.

* What are the essential Iphone aps to get, I have heard of whatsAp etc, are there any others that are a must.

* I'm definitely going to get a case, can anyone recommend any online shops and what kind of cases are the best, ie bumper, or hard case, etc. I have never bought from e-bay before.

Any help is appreciated

Micro Sim: You can get a regular sim in there by cutting it down to the microsim size. It takes patience and a steady hand. Google it, you will find youtube videos and ehows etc. Don't know about the number situation, but micro sims are available in RSA.

I am also looking for a free GPS app.

Yes you can cut your current sim or just buy a microsim and have your number and contacts transferred to it.

You buy a data bundle and activate it by typing in a code, or directly on vodacoms website or whatever.

There is a built in maps application which is alright. You *can* pirate apps if you jailbreak, otherwise I don't know.

The essential thing to do is get a US account, details are in the iPhone tips/tricks thread. All the apps are there. Too many to recommend!

Free GPS navigation apps - none that im aware of. These guys know they make money out of us, and will continue to do so.

No Apps are a must. This is a question that many people ask, but dont you think personal preference plays a big role? You know what kinds of apps you want/enjoy. Google for a few of them, turn on Genius and iTunes will recommend apps based on what you have installed. Works very nifty!

Cases... this istri cky and, once again, boils down to preference. I do not like those silicone cases for 2 reasons. They get stuck in your jean pockets, and they get wobbly and stretch. Hard cases are... well, hard. If there gets something between the case and phone, you will scratch your phone taking the case off. This might happen with other cases too, but the might be easier to manouvre around. Capdase sells a great case, unfortunately not locally yet. ATM you will need to import or pay through your ears. Ebay is generally safe, ify ou buy from pwer sellers etc (they are big companies selling stuff worldwide). The only downside is, if you get cheap shipping, it will take a while to reach SA.

MicroSIM - Don't bother with cutting down old SIMs. Just go to Vodacom and do a SIM swap to a MicroSIM, which they should have (I got one at Vodashop in Sandton City). Once that is in place then it's just like any other 'normal' SIM.
