As I Type this I am awaiting an MTN adventure to begin. I just applied for an HTC Dream and a 1 Gig Data Package. The HTC will serve dual purpose and be my phone (duh) and my modem (via usb) to my Windows 64 Bit Ultimate Laptop. So I thought I would start a thread here and document my adventures.
Some Facts on my decision making process:o
1) I have a MTN Pay as you go phone already and want to keep that number.
2)I always wanted an Android based phone and the Dream is exactly it. With a keyboard to boot.
3)My Laptop needs Internet while I wait to move and then get DSL.
4)Neotel has no service where I live (North Coast Natal)
5)I needed a phone that I could email and use the web with ease. Means for me having a keyboard.

Other options, I am still open for suggestions?

Buy the phone cash? Buy prepaid data? Dont see what else.

Oh, i would check what kind of 3G reception you get with MTN in your area. No point getting a contract and the reception is no good.

Other then that cant see the problem with taking out a conract - Pumpkin King - why the issue?

please dont tell me you're on contract!!??

if so, you deserve whats coming your way

+100000000000000000000

I still haven't gotten my final bill from them, after quite a few calls, complaints on hellopeter, emails via their website, queries logged on MTN Active, which has now been deactivated.

Buy the phone cash would cost a bit much in my opinion, and then have to buy air time still, and have to buy data bundles, and over all pay more for each? Sounds like a bad idea to me in my opinion. But Thanks for, well nevermind.. Cheers

Data billing is all over the place. Double billing, delayed billing and so on. apparently i now owe them R4200 when my monthly average is around R900

Data billing, as in there are not billing you correctly? that sucks hope is doesnt happen to me. I will keep a close eye on it and report it here.

Yip - or they bill you for data three/four months after the actual event, and during the time report your actual usage incorrectly, so you continue to use data thinking its coming of your bundle, when in fact you are over your bundle.

Steer as far away as possible from MTN.

Might have similar issues on prepaid. Buys a 1Gb data bundle has cash on hand for airtime, goes out of bundle and eats his money for airtime. Not as bad as yours, but still can get hit.

I will be tracking this very closely and in constant contact with MTN if anything arises. As well as will keep anyone following this thread abreast with information and my personal experiences. As far as steering away from MTN if you see the 5 facts in the first post it wasn't much of an option. I wanted neotel actually and there is no service.

Go check on hellopeter.com at their lack of response, thats the sort of response you'll get from MTN Active, 808, etc... as soon as you have a problem.

Similar data usage/billing problems exist for both vodacom and mtn - Depends which is the lesser of two evils. Judging by xrapidx, vodacom probably more likely to reply to queries, and actually resolve them.

Vodacom has an official representitive on this board (that responds), as well as on hellopeter - MTN have on neither - constantly being moved from a company that responds to one that doesn't on hellopeter.

Haven't tried calling Vodacom's call center yet, but last week continually tried MTN's call center, holding for between 20-40min, only got through to them once, told them to send my bill or I would consider nothing being owed - they gave me a reference number, and that was it.

I was actually with Vodacom before, from around 1997 till 2007. Left them because they gave me a crappy phone that leaf wireless insisted on repairing over and over again for the full two year contract - I don't think I ever had a billing problem, or a problem with service in general.

Thats good but vodacome is a bit more exp, and they dont have an the android phone I wanted. I also work within walking distance to MTN if need be.

Yup they are a bit more expensive. Thats why i moved to mtn. I have had not major issues with either mtn or vodacom - i find them to be the same (except price).

Getting an MTN contract for data usage... Good luck with that. You will have issues. You will be incorrectly billed. MTN will treat you like a petulant child. They will NOT respond to your queries. They will NOT resolve your issues. They WILL pretend that nothing is wrong.

But good luck with that ;)

I have the Dream, great phone, but limited at the moment. Bluetooth stack not fully functional, so can't even transfer contacts. Basically the Bluetooth only supports Bluetooth headsets. I've not been able to get the phone to act as a modem either. Maybe someone else has some pointers on this. The other downside is that it only has V1.1 of the Android OS, and until I physically see the 1.5 version out, I won't believe the "rumours" of a new ROM. V1.1 is quite a bit less functional than V1.5

Oh, and good luck with the MTN crud. I got a new contract with them (DUMBASS that I was, forgot to check the forums for who was the better devil). Had it for 3 months, and basically the first two months statements don't arrive. Have the people on my contacts list, can't phone me, but I can phone them. SMS' take about 6 hours to go through half the time, and they arrive even later. And that is obviously nothing to do with the phone.

So be aware that you're in for an interesting ride here. Very frustrating, even though I think you've jumped on at the right time to possibly avoid a lot of the hassle's with the phone.
