My MTN Adventure

Yes I will be using the phone as a modem on two different vista systems. I explained that to them at the store. So I had them call and check that it would work as I needed, I was told it would. So thats promising.

Do yourself a favour - pick up a Telkom phone, phone 0831808 - see if you get through to a person.

1 minute before i got to a consultant. I timed it! And that includes listening to the automated voice prompts etc.

Thats weird - cause I just tried before posting that message, and I just tried again - and still on hold.

EDIT: 10min and they answered! This is a first! Down from 20-40min.

****ing idiots....

Maybe i get priority - i dunno. But mine really was 1 minute. I had to tell the guy i just wanted to see how long it would take before i could speak to a person.

Sorry you having issues dude.

Did you phone from a telkom line though, and not your mtn cell?

My mtn cell. However Curtix2, if need be, will be calling from his mtn phone too - so where you going with this?

... what happens when you can't use your MTN number - like me - thats where I'm going with this - I literally have no way of getting hold of them, no response on hellopeter, no response on email, no response from MTN Active, no response from MTN.co.za

And do not expect answers/replies or any service from them. your heading should have been: MY MTN ADVENTURE - WELCOME TO CONSUMER HELL.

I agree they suck at responding, i dont doubt that. You have made that clear. Just was saying it doesnt take 10 minutes to get through if you have a mtn number (yours or somebody elses)

I Agree - they (MTN) cannot spell customer service, they don't reply, no response and when speaking to them in person the lady actually told me to shut up and listen to her halfway through explaining my problem - the same problem i've seen posted everywhere.

If you have issues, good luck resolving them Curtix2. I am lucky i haven't had problems as yet.

Can't argue there - I gave up trying to get useful service from 808 when I could dial it from my MTN number... thats why I stated, try from a telkom line.

Update Day 2

So here is where I stand. My Wife signed up for the aforementioned service on 12/08/2009. We were told we would here in about 24hours whether it was accepted or not. So where out at the shops and poked our head into the MTN office to see if they knew or not. The lady that helped us they day before was busy with a customer, and another gentleman asked me for our last name. As he was about to check for our application the lady from the day before (I will get her name today) sees us and says oh it can't be used as a modem. I was like what huh? She tells me that the phone I wanted can not be used as a modem until the 14th (today). So I replied ok then we will pass. She is like well they are going to update the rom on the 14th then you can. I say no thanks. And Explain that the likely hood of a rom update in 24 hours to fix the issues was - well - unlikely. She says well just wait till tomorrow that's the 14th. I agree with the provision that I will bring my laptop with me (Windows Vista 64bit Ultimate), the one I told her to make sure it would work with and make sure it works. Because if it doesn't then the deal is off as I mentioned when I first came in that the device must work (usb is fine) as the modem for my data plan on Vista 64 bit. The gentlemen remember the conversation from the day before and nodded. I smiled at him and said, I just want to be sure... you know this is MTN and all. He smiled. ;)So that is where I am today. I am planning on going through this afternoon with my laptop and taking my small cheap camera to shoot video of the deal as it unfolds to record any promises and document my experience. Will report again soon. Cheers

Posting from my Pre-Paid Vodocom 3g

As the title suggests my MTN adventure ended. I went back in and the nice lady there told me it would be another week before the ROM upgrade would be released allowing me to use the HTC Dream as a modem. So I said no thanks. She understood and handed me back my contract application.
I bought the vodafone usb modem cash from Chatdata? for 1299 and r 300 worth of data time. So we will see how it goes, I confirmed I can use the modem with MTN if I want to , I might when I get a chance to see whose works better. Reception so far isnt that great, but i live down a hill facing the sea so its to be expected for now. Cheers

Good luck with MTN!! They are the pits! :(

My MTN sim card was giving problems and I paid R110 for a new simcard. The lady at the MTN shop told me it would take 2 to 24 hours to activate the new simcard, but now it's already 24 hours and still not working. If you think about it, I paid the R110 for some engineer at MTN to activate my sim, cos you can buy simcards for R1 at the local Pick & Pay....but will I get a refund? I think not.

It seems MTN has given up on South Africa and now just focusing on becoming part of Bharti Telecoms.
