After Afrihost switched my account to IS and the throttling became unbearable I scoured the forums for the best alternative and MWEB looked like it. I joined them on the 10th of September and this is was happened:
I immediately got a constant download speeds of 30-40kbps and for almost two week this was great and I downloaded 15 gigs by the 21st. Then, however it all fell apart. My download speed dropped to between 1 and 4 kbps with constant disconnects. If it wasn't for a download manager I wouldn't be able to download anything. Where I was able to download about 2 gigs in a 24 hour period, I can now get 200meg! I tried both the @mweb and the @dslmweb accounts, but both are the same.
MWEB support was very helpful and first told me that there was something wrong with the line, but after having telkom test it and testing it with another ISP account myself, I found that there was nothing wrong with the line. Eventually MWEB technical support told me that because I download from rapidshare the shaping can be so severe that I will get these download speeds and disconnects!

Yes, I have a rapidshare account and download almost exclusively from them, but can the shaping really be so severe? I can understand maybe getting half the normal download speed during business hours and then full speed after hours, but getting 1-4kbps with constant disconnects? This account is now totally useless to me and I see no alternative than to cancel my account with MWEB.
If this is the way that uncapped accounts are going to be shaped then it seems that they might die a slow death after all and we will all be moving to capped accounts again soon! It seems like that is my only alternative now if I want to continue using Rapidshare and the like.

It's well known that one-click hosting services like RS and MU are shaped pretty aggressively. I'd recommend getting an Openweb 384k uncapped gold account. It costs a bit more, but you'll get better results. They've dropped the prices on these accounts too.

There is a guy posting speed results on here to for that account.
Just out of interest, how much is this account? Stupid web filter at work blocked their site as "Forums and Feedback"

I have the exact same experience with MWeb, it worked great since joining them in June but recently it's become impossible. I'm giving them notice today because I don't see the point of having ADSL uncapped if all you can do is view web pages and get email! I've already joined OpenWeb and I'm very happy so far with their speeds and service.

On my side, was extremely happy when I started with mweb. Now, since all the episodes started, my torrents have been so SLOW. What upset me was that the entire weekend was a waste of time with torrents. So right now considering moving to openweb or afrihost 50 gb acc.

I am in the same boat as you. Only I started with MWeb back in April when things were wonderful. Now I cannot even download a torrent of 349Megs in 24 hours!! It has got progressively worse. I am also looking at returning to AFrihost, or trying open web. Its enough!! If I was downloading the internet in its entirety I could understand, but I am not.
Thanks, If MWEB don't come right by end of first week in October, i will look at changing.
*sigh* If only Afrihost speeds we're decent. R98.50 a month is basically for free.

Well, if you cancel with MWEB, and go Openweb or Afrihost, let me know how it goes k :-)
I am waiting till after the 1st week in October.

Temp upgrade. Read the other posts about it. 1st week of October is the deadline. They moving clients from SAIX to MWEB. So they say...

Yes, but as far as I understood the difference between the @mweb and the @dslmweb accounts is that the one is SAIX and the other MWEB. I've tried both and the one is as bad as the other. When I joined I was given the @dslmweb account, but it was very slow from the beginning so I used the @mweb one which worked great until last week.

Most MWeb users have already been moved off the SAIX network. Changing the login will have no effect if you have been moved across...

OpenWeb standard (384) user here and couldn't be happier! (Downloading over 60gbs a month, every month.)

OpenWeb Gold (384) user here, as of October 1.

Thank you OpenWeb!

You know what... Mine was exactly the same, man, i was CRUIZING with that @mweb one. Until last week.
We're being shaped... dammit! I bet you this won't be fixed by 1st week of October. They building a better SHAPING network! :( oh noez... i was so happy.

I am waiting to see if there is any improvement next week, and if not i am cancelling! I will let you know what I decide to do.

This is interesting.... all these complaints are about slowness with torrent downloads. I haven't been downloading torrents and my browsing has been terrible on MWEB. Youtube videos buffering all the time, and that is the SD videos, not even the HD ones. I believe on a 4Mbps line you should at least be able to watch SD videos without buffering every 10 seconds.

Yes, watching YouTube video in SD is terrible on my MWeb account, constant buffering. It's never been great but recently it's got really out of hand. What's the point of uncapped internet if you can't do the basic things? I'm not wanting to download tens of gigs of data, just a little bit now and then and watch the odd video stream sometimes - not even in HD!
