My New Study

Don't wood/laminated floors scratch like a mofo?

Also, don't forget the A/C bro, a small room like that is bound to get hot quickly.

PS: The red looks awesome.

My study will also be kitted to be the central point for all my technology in the house. DSTV, xbox, PS3, Apple TV, servers etc will all be located in a server cabinet and distributed from there out.

Isn't the sound of the fans going to annoy you? How will you get the controllers to work if the consoles are in another room? Or is it close enough?

TB put in LED lighting. I can kick myself for not putting them in everywhere. Try to spend a bit on it though - the cheaper ones make weird colour patterns near the edge of the area they light.

Laminate - if you must. Just make sure the skirting is nice - can be troublesome. And your office chair will scratch it over time - bet you didn't think of that. :p I like tiles everywhere, but its a personal pref thing.

Don't blow all your budget though - nice desk & nice disk lamp is a must. Neither has to be massively expensive though - I've got one of those standard laminated fake would ones & its 100%.

Now this thread has my attention :D

I currently work in a study with 3 servers, the fans don't bother me in the slightest, and yes the room will be getting aircon.

I know that my office Chair will scratch the hell out of the laminate, which is why I'm planning on getting a decent rug (specifically a Rorkes Drift rug if I can) to go underneath my desk (which I also already have, one of those L shaped ones)

I've got a method for the controllers that use RF and IR, the only troublesome one is going to be the PS3... but I''m pretty sure there are solutions out there.

Going to abuse your guys creativity...

I'm toying with lighting Ideas for the moment. Currently I'm thinking a few downlights in the ceiling, and maybe a lamp or two.. but I'm massively open to any suggestions that could work since the room is a blank canvas atm.

I'm contemplating lighting in the floor to some degree (Maybe on a feature wall of some sort, just not 100% sure yet).

The desk will be facing out... so I will be sitting and look out through the sliding door(which is currently onto a paved area, but will soon(ish) have a garden and all sorts to look at) :) but the space is slightly bigger than the 2 photos you've posted.. its big enough as a room for a double bed and still to be able to walk around it... so the desk will be against the wall, and then out into the centre of the room.

Will do a rough sketch of the general layout this evening and post it up so you guys can get an idea of what my plan is.

If you do floor lights, you can only do so right at the edge of the wall & you'll need to angle it towards the walls too. On the whole I wouldn't though. Broadly speaking you head will be looking sorta down more than up (relative to horizontal), so floor lights would blind imo.

I'd try indirect light - sorta like they do at shopping mall parking places....light pointing upwards and a white/semi reflective surface is in front of it at 45 degree angle. That should give a nice scattered but bright light.

For reading / writing I prefer something like this

with a powerful cool white lamp. But maybe thats just me - I like lots & lots of cool white light.

Floor lighting would be used for effect only.. I have one or two paintings that will be in the office that it would be nice to make a "feature" of, there would still be lighting in the ceilings for general illumination...

Been stuffing around with AutoDesk Homestyler, here is a rough idea...

The desk layout is pretty much set in stone given the size of my desk (its a bit bigger than the one Homestyler lets me create). I would have put a PC on the desk, but Autostyler only has laptops in their selection...

@ToxicBunny

Thats poor space management, rotate the desks 180° then extend the end of the table to the end of the wall near the door handle.

If only... I can't extend the desk, since its one of those bought jobs...

The reason the desk is the way it is, is that I want to be able to look through the doors when working. I stare at the wall in my current study and its driving me bonkers.

Disagree. Desk is fine as is...just has way too many legs. For PCs you want to be in a corner, so mouse arm rest on right table & kb arm rests on left table. Pin table to wall support & lose table legs. If the plank is long enough you can easily make it lean over the sitting distance from both left & right...meaning no table "legs" where you're sitting. Not sure if that makes sense....

Also .... rotating 180 would expose screen to reflections...

Dunno where you bought but they should be seriously flexible...we jsut told them we need 2x X meters of desk surface and X cupboard units and X credenzas. Ended up throwing all teh units into place...adding the 2 desk planks & DIYing them together (w/wall mount to jump the distance). So yeah if they say they can't extend give them a skeptical look.

Its a Makro special, and it doesn't have as many legs as the one in the picture... I am thinking about making the wall side of it "legless", but the side that faces the sliding door, I want to keep the legs because the desk has a back as well which is kind nice to hide cables behind.

One of my goals with this project is to have a clean and neat study with as few cables as possible going all over the place.

Its the security system... moat filled with sharks with frikking lasers on their heads.

Our study had light colour laminated floors when we bought the house and the plastic wheels of our study chairs haven't really caused any visible damage to the floor (going on 3.5 years now). Really depends on the quality of the laminate I would say.

We have been considering bamboo flooring for the lounge to replace the tiles, but it looks to be quite a bit more expensive than laminate.

Apologies for anyone who has followed this thread,

I will not be posting on this forum regularly anymore in light of this afternoon/evenings events.

I will try find a new forum where I can keep people updated on the progress of my study, and I will post a link here when I do, or you can PM for contact details.
