I suppose being a Friday, I'm not worried if a cause (another) console wars fight. In fact, no need to even reply to this - as it's just a story.
I bought a 42" 720p and Xbox 360 about 2 years ago after being a staunch Sony fan. I thought I'd try something new and actually quite liked the Xbox 360. My brother on the other hand decided to save up for his PS3 and GT5 Prologue - which he eventually got.
We often joke around with Xbox vs PS3 comments and 'fight' about the consoles - especially when at pubs, but they're actually both cool consoles.
He decided to bring his PS3/GT5 to my house and try it on a larger screen, as he had a CRT. We plugged in via the supplied composite cable and ... well ... it looked shocking. Sony supplied no HD cable so we went out and purchased another HDMI.
With mine plugged in HDMI 1 and his HDMI 2, we loaded Forza 2 and GT5 respectivly, went to 'select a car' screen and selected the same model/colour car. We swithed inputs between consoles ... HDMI 1 ... HDMI 2 ... HDMI 1 ... HDMI 2. Hardly any difference between both. He was a little surprised as he'd been told the PS3 was morer powerful than NASA computers and boasted Cell processors that could calculate anything needed and was the most advancd procesor in the world.
I felt for him and decided to try the game itself, as maybe then he could see it being 10x better than the Xbox as he'd been told. We started the games and - well - nothing exceptional :/
Obviously he lacked things like skidmarks and basics, but I decided not to rip him off. We agreed the consoles were actually very similar when it came to gaming.
A few months later a friend of his with PS3 and a 40" 1080 TV popped over to my place and checked my Xbox 360. He told me terrible it looked on 720 with both movies and games - and his Sony 1080 with Bu Ray looked 10x better. I felt perhaps I should upgrade to a 1080 to see the fuss - but my brother decide to buy a 40" 1080 first and try Blu Ray. He was pretty excited and rented his first Blu Ray.
At the end of the movie he SMS'd to tell me that - admittingly - it looked good, but no where near what he thought after all the hype and Sony fanbois telling him how super fantastic this Blu Ray was. He didn't quite understand that hype surround the PS3, HD and Blu Ray.
Which is pretty much alwasy what I've said ; the difference, believe it or not, is not day and night as some people would have you believe. On certain games, each console may be better in cirtain circumstances - but not a 'oh wow!' and day/night difference.
Same can be said with Blu Ray and 1080 : at a standard viewing distance, an Blu Ray vs upscaled DVD differences are reasonably small.
