you see ic, the whole point of a transparent proxy is, wait for it, that its transparent, it forwards YOUR ip. You see, the IP in the packets and the IP that say apache passes on as a variable to server side applications and logs doesn't need to be the same. Therefor in a web application written in say PHP if you do
PHP: 
echo $_SERVER['REMOTE_HOST''];
that will show the users IP and NOT the IP to the transparent proxy. Try this, go to www.whatismyip.org note the Ip and recconect, then refresh the page, voila new IP, YOUR IP.

Anyways Pan's right, the dude fell for a little marketting/scam technique however it should be noted that WBS does indeed log your web activity and so does every ISP in the world, the length back that the logs go vaires from ISP to ISP but they do log, ussually for thier own internal purposes and so they can investigate with abuse claims etc but if they are approached by law enforcement they may well give up the logs without a warrant (or they might not)... welcome to the internet

Just tell them you were hacked and another person was controling your PC.
Can they prove that you were physically present at the pc?
Then you decided after the hack to format and redo your pc with AV and anti spyware progs.
Voila, all destroyed.

(ps if you redo your pc do a low level format of your HDD, info can be recovered even if deleted and with a normal format.)
 
jmn, thats sort of what i said, you see the proxy forwards your IP to thier server through HTTP headers (which is what internet apps *should* use) however its the proxies IP in the packets (which is what some *might* use if they reverse DNS lookup)

thus its transparent to everyone except the application and the point was that any scripted app on a server designed to take your IP will take the one from the headers and not reverse DNS
 
Can I just make a point here. "I don't believe WBS have the right to stop you looking at porn", or "Legal implications to logging browsing habbits"..........

It's against your constitutional right as it is invasion of privacy. Firsty you need R50000 to take it to the Constitutional Court, but you have to go through the High Court first, then they decide if it can go to Constitutional. Then you need to prove that WBS do this.

In short, don't waste your time.
 
in short WBS never infringed his constitutional rights because the message wasn't from them and they never stopped him looking at porn so... yeah
 
Kinda a tough one though. I really wouldn't care. If they don't like it they can have the modem back. (Albiet rammed in a orifis) :p

its as transparent as any other transparent proxy, it forwards your IP, wether the app uses that or does reverse dns lookup is up to the coder, and irrelevent to this topic, fact is if I were to write a web app to do nasty things it would use the supplied IP
 
Most proxies pass along the end users IP in an http header called X_FORWARDED_FOR. So even though the displayed IP may belong to the proxy doesn't mean your actual IP isn't available. Anonymous proxies will strip it out though, obviously.

ok but they can log legally, and do, they can use the logs for whatever purposes
 
They can use the logs to prosecute you if you've committed a crime. I found a link to the then proposed laws at hellkom.co.za.

Rights to privacy is nonexistent.

The best way, is to communicate over the internet with your friends using proprietary or nonstandard encryption technology.
