MyADSL Issues

But what if someone *wants* to donate as a sign of appreciation? There are lots of people out there like that..
I think they must contact Hellkom, give you the money and you can then use it to run a massive advertising campaign on MyADSL :D

What a businessman! :D

Although MyADSL may be a non profit organisation, and I feel we should treat everybody equaly, if Telkom wish to advertise here bill them 10X the international norm, just like they bill us. :)

I'd say it should only show active advertisers on the site.
I think a two page system
main page - current advertisers
second page - advertisers going back 3 months

Adsense is javascript based so AFAIK if a user is capped the local content would load at the same speed but just the ads wouldn't be able to load. You could even get really advanced and detect if he's coming from the capped ip range and not serve international ads to her.
/me agrees
From my own looking around at sites, there has been no increase or decrease in speed if they use adsense or not.

2)Wont having myadsl as a cc make it more vulnerable to being legally harassed / sued by Telkom etc?

Wouldnt a non-profit company be a better bet?

Whatever you choose make sure you, RPM, you not personally liable financially!

3) Raise the fees until you just fill the ad slots. Myadsl needs as much money as it can get. If people pay for your ads the ads are working for them. Make them pay accordingly. Business is business.

4) I have no problem with Telkom advertising here in principle. Using their money against them is a wonderfull idea. One snag though, they are renouned for their dishonesty in their ad copy. Remember the ad with the surgeon doing tele-remote operations in Kenya with glorius high definition TV and zero lag over ISDN?    How are you going to deal with Telkom ads that are false and misleading? Running misleading Telkom ads is going to really piss off many forumites myself included. Not an easy problem to deal with but the issue needs to be discussed.

By the way, a big thank you to Cara. I dont know if she is a professional journalist but she sure as heck writes like one. And its not just that she happens to share Myadsl's viewpoints, she really does write good easy to grasp articles.

Seconded! Thanks cara. Does she have a forum nick?

Yes, I also like the "advertisers page". It would be good if it could be organised in such a way that comparisons are easy. One of the most frequent questions is probably the one about which ISP is the cheapest. I think that such a page would help in this. New players would stand out and placing advertisers next to competition could be beneficial to price reduction.

I would not mind more ads however I feel strongly agaisnt Telkom being able to advertise, if they are allowed to advertise here, why then not ask them to host the site as well and while we at it, give them mod rights as well so they can remove anything they dont like.

RPM getting into bed with the devil has its problems. Take my advise, tell them no.

No need to duplicate what Hellkom is already doing when it comes to which ISP is the cheapest. (Telkom related services)

As a public service each Telkom advert should include a disclaimer which warns potential customers that the service is over-priced, over-capped, over-shaped, over-restricted and operated by Satan. Other than that I have no problem with it.

Isn't advertising Telkom on MyAdsl kind of like advertsing the Ku Klux Klan in Soweto?

I don't see this as getting into bed with anyone, or any form of "sellout" of MyADSL ethics, in fact by treating Telkom in a equitable manner this forum shows good faith.

This strength of this community is based upon being unbiased and honest, if we allow our prejudice against Telkom ( no matter how justified we may feel ) to sway our choices then our credibility is eroded.

This forum, as far as I can tell, has never been about hurting or punishing Telkom or trying to kill them, the primary goal has always been a focus on improving service delivery, pricing and related issues in the broadband sector in South Africa.

All I want is decent service offering and fair pricing, Telkom want a chance to advertise. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Again I hate to be the pessimist. I see the advert, Telkom! approved by MyADSL, (ala Helkom), as the best fastest and only broadband in SA. Not a lie but far from reality?

...and there would be at least one long thread dedicated to the false/misleading advertising - what fun that would be...
Would probably push the TK from the first place, both in number of posts and speed of growth! :D

Unfortunately not a lie, like you say! :( Reality? Also right! Because what they are offering is the only offering, it is the best and the fastest, but it is not broadband when measured by international standards!

But let them advertise! Like ic, I look forward to the long, dedicated thread... ;)

I like the ads, and am quite happy with more ad slots.

I also think that Telkom advertising on the site would be very very interesting!

ic you're right about forum members commenting on the adverts, but if I come here to read news and see cute fluffy Telkom adverts going on about how wonderful their high speed broadband is, it will piss me off to the point where I visit a lot less frequently :D

I'm not suggesting Telkom adverts aren't shown, just that they aren't full of the usual bs that drives us all to the brink of insanity.

I enjoy comming here and reading what I want to hear.(or not always)
Regarding advertising ,Im not sure .I dont pay for this site or have any saying in how its run.
If this is whats needed to continue this site ,then so be it.

Just no God damm flashes all over the place ....pls. LOL

I think the chances of rpm selling out and letting telkom dominate this site are about as good as george bush and bob mugabe saying "oops. Perhaps we were wrong..."

I must say after Telkoms statements today I am also starting to have second thoughts about Telkom ads. The amount of (justified) ill feeling towards Telkom here is legion.
