MyBB guide to quitting smoking

Are you guys on any medication (Zyban etc.), or did you go cold turkey?

I tried Alan Carr's Easyway to Quit Smoking and lasted about 2 months before I caved in again. The problem is that my personality seemed to change a bit while I was off it - almost always on the edge, angry and miserable. Eventually I thought eff it, I'm a smoker and there's no going back now. I'll try and last as long as I can before I absolutely need it, and been averaging about 5 a day for 2 months now.

I do want to quit and not get pissed off with everyone though :(

Fell off the wagon on Monday night.. smoked about 6 cigarettes (was out for supper and drinks with some freinds).. was clean for 3 weeks before that :/

I haven't started up again though... and quite frankly I'm not really feeling much better health-wise since I stopped smoking.

Well im sure you can carry on going if you didnt start up again. The health benefits start from 2 days to 6 months. There are various things that change.
I like to do lots of sports etc when im quitting cos it keeps me busy, helps clear the nicotene faster and makes you feel healthy.

I decided to go cold turkey. I guess the problem with this approach (for me anyway) is that I cannot really convince myself at the moment that smoking was all that bad for me... I'm not feeling better since i quit... eish... gotta stay strong :/

You will notice the benefits especially if you are active. For extra motivation google "immediate benefits of stop smoking".

I also did it cold turkey and so far have been staying strong and starting to feel a lot better.

My mom had her last ciggie last week, but she used Champix. She never tried to quit before and according to her she hardly have any cravings with Champix and her mood hasn't really changed. I do believe Champix works! I never thought my mom would be able to quit she's been smoking for 20+ years and more than a pack a day.

I am sure you have read the replies but it sounds like you have the same issue as me, it never gets better for me no matter the length of time, that bad angry mood is always there eventually driving me back to smoking. The longest i have quit is about 1 year and 2 odd months and for that year i was a different person hey, lost my g/f was raging all the time. Eventually i just gave in. The easiest i have found to quit is zyban or welbutrin but the side effects means i cannot use for more than 2 months which is great because it gets you out the habit but the mood boy o boy scary shyte when i don't smoke . My g/f said i had become a monster and she couldn't take anymore LOL. I think i am willing to die of lung cancer if it means i don't have to be in a mood for that length of time again. What i like about zyban is that you will hate cigi's after the first week, the taste and smell is horrific. It makes you want to quit for no other reason than the cigi's are disgusting. Nothing to do with your mental state the drug makes cigi's horrific.

Kingbel you won't feel the change in 3 weeks bud, minimum of 2 months before you notice anything i reckon. Although i must admit i have never felt unhealthy smoking or had issues breathing. Kingbel dude i don't mean to be harsh here i know quitting is hard but you either want to or you don't, if you don't want to quit you are wasting your time :D. You seem to have same issue with drinking as me, avoid drinking for the first 2-6 months if possible or you won't make it.

Mike i actually wanted to ask you if you have ever felt like that mood change would come right? Has there been a time when you thought no this mood will go away or was it constant everyday thing? How bad does it get?

The problem is that even though the physical cravings might lessen, you will still often just get the immense craving for a smoke.

This can happen even 10 years after quiting.

Jittery. Before when I quit, I'm sure I was feeling a lot better than I feel now at Day 7. It seems it is hardest in the morning when I have a cup of tea.

For me it was the hardest after eating something. I need to figure out a way to quit, but remain the same person.

You are right... and you are not being harsh... sometimes a bit of 'tough love' is necessary during these sorts of exercises. Dunno about how possible it will be to give up drinking for 2-6 months... I think I have resigned myself to the idea that I am not going to quit smoking altogether, but rather cut down drastically and have the odd smoke when I drink.. I know it would be fairly easy for me to just go back to smoking regularly again... but it's a chance I am going to take for now.

Well I have also fallen off the wagon chaps. On the brink of a divorce I figured **** it. So ya. Got me a pack of my favorite brand and smoked myself happy.

Back to the drawing board I guess.

O well if it is helping you then don't feel to bad. The nice thing about quitting is you can do it whenever you like :D.

Marlboro? Ahhh divorce or long term relationships ending is crap, the worst part is the friends :D. Who do you keep as friends and who do you never talk to again :p

I can relate to what you say. A relationship ending was the catalyst for me starting again. I have finally got my head straight (well, sort of) so I had the resolve to try and quit again. As Killadoob says, you can quit again. I've quit many times. :wtf: When the time is right you will do it.

Thanks for the replies.

I kinda picked the worst time in my life to quit. 2 small kids very close together age wise. That alone has been seriously trying. That I guess has added huge pressure to the marriage which is taking strain.

We going to work through it. Divorce is seriously the last resort I think.

But if smoking gets me through it well then so be it. The wife hates it but I cant please everyone can I :p

Im on a week and 1 day today. Feeling great, have not felt much health benefit but I went for a jog yesterday and it was easier than normal so that is something.
I honestly would not have been able to do this so far without the electronic ciggie and Im not battling in the least atm.
I dont use the elec one often, its just when im really needing something then I have a bit of that and im fine again. I would very much recommend it to anyone that is battling.

Been smoke free for 18 months
The first month was the worst - I was like a caged tiger :)
However i am now more relaxed than i ever was.Waking in the morning without a headache is a real pleasure.Unfortunately the craving never goes away but it does become more manageable.
Good luck to all those trying to stop.
