Mythtv / Linux media Centre

I have used MythTV.... got a MythTV box.. dont know what I would do without it. I love the modules, even installed the one to play all the old nintendo and sony games :P ph33r my Streetfighter 1

I am not a big fan of Myth... I ran it for a few months but found it to be a bit too disjointed. Performance also wasn't great on an old 3GHz P4.

How does that compare to MythBuntu? I'm thinking of slapping a TV card into a spare box ...

I am a huge fan of Linux, but to be honest, have had far too many issues trying to get Myth to work, and eventually (due to nagging from Mrs Ryder to be able to actually watch some media) I opted for Media Portal on Winblows which is fantastic!

I have been meaning to check out LinuxCE though!

I have had a mythtv box for 4 or so years. At the time it was a bit annoying to setup (might be better now) but once it is working it has loads of useful features that come standard and many good addons.

Mythtb would be the perfect media center if they got a proper UI redesign as the current UI can be a bit clunky.

I'm also using mediaportal and porting frontrow graphics for a frontrow skin which looks awesome so far. :)

I've got a MythTV box built on Gentoo. It is really fantastic! I haven't heard of a media center that comes close to mine when it comes to functionality. I can rip dvd's with the few remote presses, play music/videos, automatically skip ads... there is very little I can't do. I can even listen to radio stations! Most of it is standard MythTV, but it is very easy to add new menu items to do custom tasks (like playing radio).

To be honest though, it took years to get it to the point where everything just works. Every few months I feel adventurous and run a world (global software) update on Gentoo, which breaks half the stuff. But, I like getting my hands dirty, so that is fine :)

If I ever reinstalled, I would install MythBuntu. I am actually planning on setting it up on another partition when I have some spare time again.

EDIT: a great resource on HTPC's is the techies forums.
