N95 8GB or Not

Hi guys

I been banging my head on whether to get this phone or not! Lots of bad customer reviews on the net but some good ones from some users I spoke to except one who has owned many Nokias but has moved over to SE cos he got fed up.

I played a bit with the phone, not the damn model in the store! Its quite light, has an amazing screen. I am probably gonna go with MTNSP on a Procall 120 IIRC.

I understand there is a delay when retrieving GPS. And it sometimes hangs if one runs many apps at once. Question is, does the entire phone make up for these problems and can one work around these problems?

Aside: Is there a reason why a search for N95 comes up with zero matches but Nokia does?

Get the N95-8GB. Its a brilliant phone.

You can work around the problems by not running many applications at once while you are using the navigation software.

I use the N95 and from my understanding, the N95-8GB uses the same N95
NaviLink GPS chip with assisted GPS (A-GPS) software.

Its not as good as most stand alone GPS units but it does a good job still.

I have a theory, which I am convinced is more than a theory, and that is that more people are willing to go online and bitch about something than people who go online to praise something. It is human nature. We are quicker to moan than praise.

I always keep this in mind when reading online reviews. And I prefer to rather take more cognisance of professional online reviews rather than people's opinions.

I have the original N95 and any issues we did have with the GPS have been resolved with firmware upgrades from Nokia. I connect in a few seconds now. I am sure the same would apply to the 8Gb version.

Will never use anything but Nokia, and its the best 1 I had in a long time. Very stable, GPS worx like a charm (I use Garmin Mobile XT) and its just so damn sexy!

Awesome camera too.

Does anyone know if this is true of the 8Gb version? This is what it says on GSM :

The main downside of the GPS receiver however has nothing to do with its sensitivity. It lays in its incompatibility with 3rd party applications. In other words: if you want to make use of the built-in receiver you have to rely on Nokia maps. In case you want to go for another software solution you will have to purchase an external Bluetooth GPS receiver. This is not a very customer-friendly solution by Nokia at all. After all, the owners of Nokia N95 8GB paid good money for their phones and it would be nice if they can make full use of their capabilities instead of being limited to Nokia-developed software only.

I am able to use my original N95 with Garmin but this seems to say you can't on the 8Gb? True or not?

My mom had a phone renewal a few weeks ago, so I chose the 6500 slide for her. Bear in mind, she's in her 50's and she's not that tech savvy. After giving her an Elvis sms alert tone "return to sender" I was the coolest kid on the block It's easy enough to use, but it's still a modern phone and I'm sure it will last her a while. There's actually a few user friendly Nokia phones to choose from these days, I wasn't that clued up with them, but was surprised when I went with my mom

Ive just installed Garmin Xt on my N95 8 Gig seems to work fine so far, will let you know in more detail later!

Phone rocks!!!!! Had the Imates and Tytns and this phone just kicks ass!

So it seems the N95 is good option. Lets see if there's any other opinions. hopefully i will make up my damn mind tomorrow and just get it. hope mtnsp has stock!

Also got the gyrometer working with a few apps, like drinking beer, darth vader's sword and shake to read an sms. it's like the iphone, if you flip it it flips the screen automatically. Also tried the video out this weekend!!!!! donwloaded a divxplayer for the N95, tv out it to any tv and voila! your own portable divx player, 8GB's!
also the videos and pic qualities are great...

Only con, battery life, but that's like playing with it all day long, hehe
oh also battery life with the GPS activated +/- 3 hours but bought a holder with recharger included, problem solved.

normally called an accelerometer. There are a bunch of apps that make use of it, punch 'accelerometer' into youtube and you'll see some videos of the various apps.

Flip Silent is a cool app, if your phone rings and you're in a meeting - just flip it over, silence.

By far the best phone i have ever had. The normal N95 has had some terrible reviews, definitely not the 8GB...

I have changed the product code, using the European firmware, not that stupid branded Vodafone one, and everything is running perfect!
