Naked ADSL pricing

At a rate of R300 or even R400 per month for a Naked ADSL line, it is debatable if ISPs will be interested in such a service.

Would that number drop if more and more ISPs got on board? Telkom should sell them off in large bundles to the bigger ISPs.

How can they provide voice only for R133.30 pm then? They making it seem like ADSL is subsidizing voice. Always thought it was the other way around.

Voice rental or Calls? I'd say Call revenue.

Yeah, though comparing my Telkom bill to my mobile bill always makes me think Telkom are giving the calls away :D

What percentage of line owners are ADSL subscribers? I know a lot of people who have a phone-line but use mobile broadband. (It really baffles me)

Majoor added that their network infrastructure means that it makes no financial sense to separate voice and DSL services on an ADSL access line as it will not reduce the underlying cost of providing the service
So they are going to fight naked adsl. Sigh. Then everyone will just go wireless except if you require consistent latency.

The problem is wireless networks require a lot of money to cover the capital in developing the infrastructure, the rest are just profiteering off their existing systems.

According to Mr Majoor your statement is more relevant to DSL. Hence the Telkom cost > 8Ta cost

So we should all put in an extra R400 odd for the price to come down?
No. More new ADSL users - economies of scale should push the prices downwards.

Too lazy to go check their latest financials but I think it is 750 000 of 4 200 000.

Aren't 8ta piggy-backing off the other providers?

Also, the outlay for masts vs wired connection to each individual house must be a lot less surely?

What would be interesting to see is a report on how many people get phonelines purely for ADSL, like me (initially). I'd imagine the majority of line users either had phonelines before ADSL came onto the market or needed it for voice purposes.

"Telkom connects me to my bras"
Damn, I should write ad's for them!

Another article about this one the way. Telkom loses money on their voice lines - known as an Access Deficit (or Access Line Deficit). They make money through voice calls, and hence cross-subsidizes the shortfall on lines through the profit on voice calls.

The rental argument is silly when considering they are charging per GB on the network. Basically unless their per GB cost is totally made up of international/local peering access equiv cost(you pay for dedicated line not per GB) then they are basically charging twice for the same thing.. i.e. in part per GB and then 2ndly as a huge rental cost. What he is saying doesn't quite make sense as that essentially means that you have an un-contended / dedicated amount of bandwidth from your line to the telkom core network which is completely false. if everyone started downloading at the same time the speeds would drop due to the fact that the line is shared. 2ndly the main fibre lines last for a heck of a long time and i am pretty sure this is again shared with voice where possible.

With wireless now covering all the poor areas Telkom must focus on jacking up high usage exchanges where there is great demand for 10Mb+ DSL. I can't understand how SA conditions can be so different compared to international since high income areas do not have to subsidize rural areas any more.
IMO providers other than Telkom will be more efficient at calculating business cases for these high usage areas if naked dsl gets given the green light.

Majoor explained that line rental covers the cost of the copper from the clients’ premise to the Telkom exchange while the ADSL access charges cover the cost from the DSLAM in the exchange to the BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server).

So I assume we can quote Telkom on this one when we demand Full LLU? I mean if their cost for the DSLAM -> BRAS is the cost problem, then this is where we need competition right? I guess they will rephrase it later so it is in their advantage.
