Name and Shame: Unauthorised Debit Orders Thread

Untrue. Standard Bank gave me the exact details of the company who took my money three times after I picked it up. That trial was followed and pursued and ended up in a lawsuit against a fraudulent company who illegally instated debit orders on MANY people's accounts. HelloPeter link here: https://www.hellopeter.com/kga-life/reviews/unauthorized-debit-orders-91-2281196

In short, the company is/was called DisaStyle. Google it. They set up debit orders using a debit order company. They kept me in the loop and the end result was:

Dear My Name,
Thank you for your patience and allowing us the opportunity to investigate your complaint in respect of Disastyle’s unauthorised debiting of your bank account.
We have requested Disastyle to provide us with proof of the mandate upon which they acted to debit your account.
Disastyle could not provide us with a mandate, instead explaining that the debit order deduction happened by mistake. Due to an internal error they have presented the wrong files for debit order deductions.
We should point out at this stage that we were not satisfied with their response and decided to conduct a full audit and investigation of Disastyle.
Amongst the additional questions we asked during our investigation was how Disastyle obtained your banking details.
The explanation offered by Disastyle was that the account details were obtained previously through the sale of a different product at an earlier time, or alternatively that their posession of your account details was due to a capturing error on their side.
Disastyle’s answers failed to satisfy us. As such we have done the following:
• We have instructed Disastyle, as well as Insuregroup, to cease and desist from making any further debit orders;
• We have terminated our relationship with Disastyle;
• We have set up a meeting with the FSB with the purpose of ensuring that Disastyle does not continue their business practices elsewhere under a different guise or through another provider;
• We are in the process of compiling evidence that may assist the Commercial Crimes Unit of SAPS with an investigation of Disastyle.
Thank you again for your patience and bringing your complaint to our attention. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact us directly.
Kind regards,
Their person's details.

Don't back down. Act, keep at it and stop these guys.

So the end result was a few meetings with the FSB, and possibly a case with the SAPS.

Almost 100% bet that absolutely nothing came of it, or if anything did, another company popped up 2 days later doing exactly the same thing.

So...rather just give up? Why not just ask their banking details and deposit your salary into their account every month then? It's a lost cause anyway?
Not exactly. There are ways to mitigate it. Most banks have a saving pocket or move to Capitec and get access to 5/6 accounts. Chances of them hitting the one with my money in are next to nothing.

I used to report on unauthorised debit order abuse for Moneyweb. Today I noticed that I've been scammed by the same people referred to in this thread. Reference is NCONNUPS15_8739 - INS PREM 1351646251. Amount is R99.

It is not enough to simply reverse the debit order. These criminals must suffer some consequence. I doubt they will ever see the inside of a jail cell, but it is possible to name and shame them publicly.

First step is to identify the recipient of the money. Insist on a company registration number. If it is a sole proprietorship, insist on an ID number. Second step is to ask the recipient for proof that you subscribed to their 'service', whatever it is they purport to do.

Anyone who has fallen victim to this scheme is welcome to contact me for assistance. I will most likely write an article for publication on Moneyweb. Julius at Moneyweb dotcoza.

Had the same deduction on 18 October. I instructed the bank to stop future deductions and reverse the incident- waiting for reply.
I called 011 4831188, but was informed that the banks are giving people the wrong number- Umvuso's number is 031 110 0820. The person at 031 said they are doing the admin for Umvuso, and promised to look into the matter and call me back (which I doubt).

Just another payroll period in South Africa, banks simply don't give a rats ass in trying to find where these things are coming from or who they're going to. Few months ago we had a blast with FNB accounts, a random amount off 119 went off and everybody reversed it. If you don't know about it, just reverse it, no point in fighting with the banks to investigate because they wont.

The transaction was reversed by the bank, so the nett loss was R5-00 (bank fees). I can have the bank put a permanent block on it, but then only for the R99 one; should they change it to R99-50, it will not be blocked as it will be seen as a new transaction. As said in post #12: the banks just process the instruction, and reverse it on your instruction. No confirmation on validity of the instruction...

This just pisses me off no end. Why do they charge banking fees on fraudulent transactions? Surely that is a crime itself. :mad:

I got the same debit order R99 with reference "Nconnups15"
I'm with FNB and used the online banking site to "Reverse" and "Block future debit orders".
Thanks @FNB for sending me an SMS notifying me of a "New debit order" - which alerted me to the problem.
But, NoThanks to the banks for allowing ANY debit orders without the correct paperwork with signatures etc.
I am continuously surprised that the banks get away with this. If they do not have my authority how can they make a deduction? The cell 'phone companies do much the same too. I presume it is meant to save the banks some inconvenience, so the concept of charging you to reverse the theft is staggering.

The banks will argue that it is your fault thus they not going to bother.

I think you guys are being shafted by the banks over here. It can be different. In the UK if a direct debit goes wrong, the banks undertake to reverse it, no questions asked. British Gas carried on deducting for ages after I changed supplier, and when I got back the bank sorted it for me. No charge.
ABSA however are messing my wife about no end. In this case the deduction was not authorised: she had never dealt with the company concerned. They are still saying they can only go back 6 months. My wife got an SMS, but could not get through to the number at the bank they gave (accident? Hmmmmm) so SMS'd them. When she found out she went into the bank, and was told it would be sorted. It was not. Still ongoing.

Any advice, thanks.

UPDATE - So STD Bank reversed the R99, but the lady also told me 'it will probably happen again as they have my details now', so, not very comforting.

....

My conclusion is that the banks love these things, as apparently they charge the legit customer a reversal fee, can they be any more greedy?

Yip. The reversal cost and a STOP for the stop order probably are in total more than the R99.

Same scam, same date, same amount. Capitec refuses to waive the fee, and simply says that there's nothing they can do. Also, Capitec blamed me for handing over my banking details to these fraudsters.

Also had R99 deducted on 18 October. I'm with ABSA. Their telephone enquiries told me for the D/O to go through the company needs to have either voice recording or signature as proof. So now going to call their magtape division on 086 000 0701 tomorrow seeing that their hours is only 8-4 and then I want to see proof of either signature or voice.

Bliksems!
