Natural Sweeteners

I tried the stevia liquid which I found bitter and the Stevia Candarel pills just as gross, so just went cold turkey and now drink coffee sugar free.
Everything tastes so different when you no longer have sugar, every tiny bit of sweet is so intense.

I've got to agree. Just ditch the sugar... you will adjust!

What makes you think it's a risk?

Just google for 'sucralose gut flora'. I've never really looked into it, but I go out of my way culturing kefir, lacto fermented vegetables, and I drink kombucha as well as take 'EM' probiotics. My digestion has never been better so it's not worth the risk for me.

Interesting.

Oh well, I'm doing fine... and as for the reported weight gain... down 6kg in 3 weeks :D

so much easier just to eat some prunes

I bought the Hulett's one yesterday - Equi Sweet. Substitute each pill for a teaspoon of sugar, but f**k, the s**t is still bitter. I put 8 pills in and it still tasted bitter. It also contains steviol extract but damn, nothing tastes as good as sugar.

What might be interesting is to locate some Stevia plants, not always easy to find despite them growing very easily from seed.
They grow like a house on fire too.

Try some of the leaves on their own, dried and fresh. Source.

I wonder what a drink mixed with Stevia for sweetness and Pineapple Sage for flavour would taste like?

You can buy 'whole leaf stevia' in the health food shops. It does not have as much of a bitter taste as the refined product, but it does not dissolve.

Was at Dischem yesterday and almost bought Xylitol. It is cheaper than @ clicks. I think it was about R116.00 for a 1KG. As I got to the till I got cold feet though. lol

I have 4 plants going. Bought one and it grows like a weed, saw some seed thought how hard can it be 20 seed 1 seedling. They are a pita to grow from seed, read up on it and the recommended method to propagate them is to split the plant, so this year I split the smalles plant (one grown from seed) and wonder by wonder got 3 split (2 looks good, one is struggling a bit). I am tempted to split my original bought plant, it is pretty huge atm.

Be aware that different plants can have different concentrations of the stevoid so when you get a plant that is really sweet do all you can to propagate that one.

Never bought the stuff in the shop, dry my own leaves and use that. Have not kicked out sugar completely since the stevia does leave a slight aftertaste (just need to get used to it)

Woah this is really cool. I must try get some seeds to grow. I like Xylitol but it is quite expensive.
