Natural Sweeteners

I see that Coke is planning to release soft drinks containing stevia products soon.

But... I like coffee. So that's not for me, then.

I dunno, you can give it a shot, you might like it. A bottle is not that expensive. I said cos I don't really like any kind of artificial sweetener in coffee. Black Tea can handle it... but anything with milk in... I think tastes funny. so I feel the same way about nutrasweet or sacharine sweeteners.

That Coke range looks interesting, and I think it might just work. The taste of this stuff I think might just compliment the soft drink range.

It's a very strange taste, hard to describe... like nothing I ever tasted. It does make things sweet, but not overly so.

Cool, I'll try it.
It's either that, or give up coffee. I could do without the coffee, actually. I just like some coffee with my sugar.

That's why all those sugar-free gum packs carry the warning that 'excessive consumption may lead to diarrhoea' :D

That's out, then. The reason I'm looking for alternatives is because I consume too much sugar. I think I fall in the 'excessive consumption' category. :o:(
Some of them contain an ingredient in laxatives (phenylalanine). Nearly all have some warning or another about cancer, tumours and the like. Stick to natural things and at least we know the effects of them.

Artificial sweeteners are not unhealthy for you but taste horrible IMO, these natural fruit sugars contain similar amounts of kJ, but sweeteners taste horrible IMO.
Coke = leka
Coke Zero = exactly the same as coke light(doesnt taste at all like coke), gross!
Although there is some rare genetic disorder that make you allergic(or something) to sweeteners.

Artificial sweeteners aren't unhealthy, really? Seems many scientists and doctors would disagree with you about many of them. Even some of those that haven't yet been banned have a bad rep. Such as acesulfame k which has shown to cause brain tumours in experiments following its rushed FDA approval. And the aspartame issue as been raging on for some time now as well. Fortunately I don't drink soft drinks as well as coffee, nor do I have sugar in my tea so I'm OK in this department, until I have the occasional craving for a sweet...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame#Health_concerns
In 1999, FDA scientists described the safety of aspartame as "clear cut" and stated that the product is "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acesulfame_K
Critics of the use of acesulfame potassium say the chemical has not been studied adequately and may be carcinogenic, although these claims have been dismissed by the USFDA and by equivalent authorities in the European Union.

No coffee:eek:????? How do you survive:p

Now if only we were all as perfect as you

I'd rather have sugar than artificial sweeteners. I know of the bad rep that they have, and I think it's actually deserved.

I've read that but take the FDA's approvals lightly to be honest. It's not that I avoid the sweeteners because of it though. I just don't partake in the coffee and soft drink addictions. I drink heaps of water and fruit juice and occasionally I'll indulge in some rooibos, but I just don't get the same satisfaction from coffee as others do. I do however get satisfaction from an ice cold glass of water on a hot day.

But regarding the sweeteners, there are still numerous websites which claim the FDA is wrong, and I really wouldn't put it passed them to rush through results or muddy the waters a bit, for the sake of their soft drink buddies high up in the corporate food chain...

Refined sugar has just as bad a rep. Claims are that it sucks nutrients from your body due to the refinery process and is also a carcinogen. Organic, unrefined sugar is the healthier option according to many who've studied this process. All claims though and as per the interwebz - you'll find a multitude of websites contradicting each other...

Tastes better.

I know it's not good for you. Unfortunately, I do have a sweet tooth. Which is what started the search for alternatives. I've tried to do without, and it just hasn't worked.

A sweet tooth can be suppressed with fresh fruit. If you don't feel inclined to eat fresh fruit on its own, as many people are unfortunately, then you could make your own fresh juice, make jellies, healthy desserts etc. It's healthy and tasty at the same time. Start a healthy desserts thread and I'll post some recipe ideas for you if you like...

Unless I'm supposed to extract it myself, more detail please :)

They say sucking a sugar cube will dull your craving for a chocolate or two. :)

Aha - I meant fructose earlier - not glucose. Duh! Thanks peder...:o

Fructose is the stuff from the health food shops and is the fruit sugar.

Ava - will get to your dessert thread soon...

Fructose can be bought almost anywhere it looks like white sugar its just a fruit sugar... usually bought in the sugar isles of a shop...

It's an essential amino acid.

Stick to natural things and at least we know the effects of them.
Natural does not mean safe. It certainly does not mean we know their long-term effects.

But regarding the sweeteners, there are still numerous websites which claim the FDA is wrong, and I really wouldn't put it passed them to rush through results or muddy the waters a bit, for the sake of their soft drink buddies high up in the corporate food chain...
I've struggled for find any anti-sweetener information that is not coming from health crackpots. I don't trust the FDA, but if anything similar agencies in places like Europe are over-cautious, to the point of stupidity.

When it comes to phenylalanine I've seen some health nuts promoting it as beneficial and others practically claiming it is part of a conspiracy to melt our brains.
