The South African Navy says it's well prepared and equipped for any possible terrorist attacks ahead of the 2010 world cup.

This comes after a top South African naval expert warned local authorities aren't prepared for any such possible offensives.

But the South African Navy's Bernhard Teutenberg says the coastline is secure.

He says together with other law enforcement groups, South Africa's major ports will be prepared for the world cup.

I am comforted by the fact that our navy will keep us safe and warm but really - what possible threat do they imagine could come from the sea ?
 
I don't believe this, I'm sorry.

We are not really prepared for anything... but I guess this is just me being negative, the only way we'll know is when it does happen and how we handle it.

3200km open coastline, inadequate border control on this coastline, crazy people who want to plant bombs a la beijing, many fishing vessels trawling close to this open coastline, a tiny rubber duck at night with a few crazy people on board..... I do not wish to be a conspiracy theorist - but the above scenario is not totally fictitious.....
 
We might be able to stop a brightly painted and conspicuos fishing boat but a speed boat with crazy terrorists on board I doubt. But then again what are the chances of that happening here? And besides I live way inland so I'm not worried :D

But I still don't get it - lasers are targeting mechanisms. Do the dolphins also carry weapons, and who do they plan to shoot from Table Bay ?

Anyone important will be inside the stadium, so the weapons would need to be guided missiles at least.

Thank goodness for our navy !

There is a world of difference though between "what threats are theoretically possible" and "what is reasonably likely to expect to actually happen". If we lived according to what could possibly happen, we'd all live in little padded cells and never go out.

A big part of me says, firstly, who would really want to bomb SA, even with the world cup here? Secondly, if they wanted to, wouldn't they already have? Thirdly, if they want to, our navy is far too inadequate to protect our own coastline, and fourthly, if they want to, there are far easier means to carry out threats than via the coast ... we also have a huge and grossly inadequately protected land border with multiple third-world African nations, and never mind that, even resources and access to bombs etc. within the country (they're badly leaking out via the army for example) that you could probably carry out most threats completely within the borders anyway. I mean look at ATM bombings, do you think ATM bombers come in via the coast? Don't think so, so just hire some of those guys.

OK, the world cup might attract some people looking to cause trouble, but then, it's pretty unlikely they'll come in via the ocean to cause their sh*t.

We should just deputize all the perlemoen poachers, they'll spot the bogies way before the Navy.

The Navy can't even cover Simonstown's beaches.
 
What worries me is that our emergency services are not capable of responding to
an emergency. As for terrorism, as much as it is highly likely in case of a major
international event, I don't think the terrorists will come by sea. In fact I think its
possible that they may not need to travel very far at all.
 
Aeroplanes flying over stadia during matches get shot down or something or nothing.

I agree with you. Sh%t can happen anywhere, anytime. Point is - the coastline is even more vulnerable than our land borders. But, who would want to attack us? The taxis are doing a fine job already...:D
