Need a second hand comfortable car

Did you drive the auto or manual Megane? No idea how the auto's are in the Renaults. Sister drives a Clio and Mom a Koleous but all manuals.
Yeah auto. It's a good dual clutch. Tends to hold on to rewards a bit longer than it should when your foot feels heavy, but it's great for a daily drive...

The budget car was going to be the daily driver and the 86, the weekend special. After this week though, just looking for something that will tick all the boxes.
R200-360k ish budget wise

Bolded bits are the important ones..

Ah, the 86 as a weekend special... glad you're consolidating into one car.

Go with the Megane. I test drove it and it's awesome and comes packed with tech. Will be trading mine in for one when it gets out from repairs.

Warranty and service plan runs for 5 years.

Get a Golf if you want to pay a lot of money to be like everyone else...

This sounds on point.

Some other options:

Less comfort but more performance: Focus/Fiesta ST
Left field: Toyota C-HR/Honda HR-V
Sexy: Volvo V40 R Design or regular T3

Personal preference. Don’t like humongous cars which I feel the 320 is. Coupes are also my preference, thus my small 86 coupe

Yeah it is on a different larger platform but I reckon still much of a muchness and worth trying out to see if it really makes a real world difference to you.

I like the look of Coupes but not really living with them, which is why I love these cars that do both and just hide the rear doors somewhat.

Considered the Volvo but from what I remember from Dolby the petrol consumption even on the Diesels was a problem.

Yea - they're not great. I don't hold a candle to my brothers 120D in terms of consumption - I have never seen anything less than 5.3l/100km (trying my best consumption ONCE on the way to DBN) and average late 7s.

I'm also (obviously) not as quick - but I'd take it time and time again over the BMW.

Bear in mind though, I *think* next year is last production date

EDIT : Someone is bound to come in about resale value. I got a valuation of V40 R Design and he gave me 1% higher than book, which is pretty good.

So I drove the Megane GT today and it's fancy! Clutch holds on too long as Mike stated but nice car. Strange that no leather seats but Alcantra and heated seats are standard only in the GT-Line edition :wtf: It's Ok.
Drove the 220d a little after and it felt a lot more premium. Clutch also had a strange delay but think it's cause I had it in Eco Pro or Turbo Lag? Felt deferient from the delay I felt in the Megane. In Sport mode it moved a bit quicker. Torque is a lot more than the GT and left me with a grin on my face.

So far 220d is a little ahead, pending me finding one with decent extras for a decent price, will see whats what.
Going to see the Volvo next weekend probably and will see what else shakes. Any other suggestions would be appreciated guys.

Side note : Really made me appreciate the 86. It isn't the fastest or the fanciest but ***** nothing puts a smile on my face like that. Going to miss a manual as well :(

Remember the Volvo must be the R-Design spec otherwise you will come here next week complaining about how it's not sporty enough.

Eco-pro makes car really slow, I prefer comfort mode and gearbox in sport mode, this keeps the gears for slighty longer and only shift if the next gear will also be above 2000rpm where the bigger turbo kicks in.

Comfort is the normal mode and definitely much better drive than eco-pro, but doesn't putting the gearbox in sport mode/sport shift significantly increase fuel consumption compared to just comfort?

Yep just a bit, it's still much less than a petrol engine. I avg 6.9L/100km, mixed driving. It switch to sport for overtaking, mostly everything in comfort most of the time.

Honestly whether you get a 220d or 320d you will be a happy man. Those should be your only two options.

Nope. Just love my BMWs, pity I can’t afford one

You cant afford one cos you have created a belief system. Change your mindset to believe you can afford anything you'd like and you'll see the day you buy your BMW of choice, you'll come to realize BMW ain't that great ;)
