Good Day

I apologize if this is in the wrong thread.

The story... My ISP has a fair usage policy, mine is 20gig per month. If I reached this, my line (1mb / uncapped) speed gets halved. What is strange thou, for the last 4 months - comes the 15th and my line speed gets halved. If I question as to why, I get told I've reached my fair usage limit. So I asked for a usage reported, which is below. Runs in order as shown.

I don't upload large files, video's, movies and music. My laptop is set to a metered connection. I only recently started to play an on-line game. Maybe I'm missing something and that's why I need assisting in establishing the problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Even if you exclude the uploaded data, you are still going over your 20GB/month limit, so I am not sure what your question is?

Thank you for the reply

The question is, is it normal to have such a high upload considering all the points as listed above (no large files, music etc being uploaded)

Got a cellphone that's uploading photo's/doing backups to the cloud perhaps?

My cellphone alone uses around 30Gb a month on Wifi only. Uploads between 3Gb and 10Gb, depending on what gets backed up or how many pics I take during the month...

Thanks for the reply.

2 Cellphones yes with both on a usage limit. Did a test where the cellphones was not connected for a month, and upload usage was high (August 2017).

One thing I forgot to mention, about 3 days after my query to the ISP, my line speed was normal again. That just made we wonder what is happening.

I also compared my usage to that of my friend who uses the same ISP, he plays on-line games, downloads more than I do, and they have 3 phones connected and 2 laptops on the same package as me (1mb/20gig fair usage). Although he reaches his limit as well, his upload usage is less than mine.

What ISP what package? have you thought of changing your package?
As far as i know 2mb line is the lowest you can get from telkom and the 1mb is capped by the isp.
in other words your router should be syncing at 2mb, going with a capped package you can double the speed and still get good amount of data.

Thank you for the reply

Its a local provider here in Bela-Bela.

My package is a 1mb line uncapped with a 20gig fair usage. Yes i did think about upgrading, but couldn't afford it. I just want to figure out as to why the upload is so high.

Sounds like you are using a WISP... It is difficult to answer you question. It would be best to get something in place to monitor BW and Data usage. My guess would be torrents, but you mentioned that it can't be that. Also, what game is it that you are playing?

Thanks for the reply.

Any suggestions on which monitoring software I can use. The game is League of Angels 2. Torrent client set not to seed during and after download. File size normally between 250-500mb that gets download. 2 torrents a week.

Thanks for the assistance.

I use Untangle and there are a couple of other software that can do it as well. It all depends on how IT literate you are. :o

Thank you for the reply. Does knowing where to turn the laptop on/off count as IT literate lol. Just joking, I know my way around some stuff. Will give the software a go and take it from there.

Good luck. You are welcome to pm me your email/skype details, if you require more information on Untangle.
